摘要:
AbstractLanguage is a systemof systems that fit into the total sociocultural macrosystem. All these systems react intra‐ and intersystemically according to general principles mapped out by the authors in their bookParametric Linguistics. Analysis of some of these principles in this article raises the question of scientific prediction within the sociocultural macrosyste

摘要:
AbstractThe present survey investigated the communication activities of a general adult population. Particular attention was given to speaking and listening activities. The study includes a broad spectrum of occupations.Questionnaires containing a communication log were mailed to four hundred randomly selected adults in the San Diego area. (One hundred and seventy‐three logs were returned.) The logs, divided into fifteen minute segments, contained the following categories: sleep, no communication, conversation, television, reading, listening, speaking. Brief definitions for each of these categories were contained in a cover letter. Results, in general, indicated: 1) that administrators, salesmen, students, teachers and professionals rank as high communicators; 2) approximately three‐fourths (72.8%) of our waking time is given over to communication activit

摘要:
AbstractThis study investigatedone important aspect of the physical and mental welfare of patients receiving care in institutional and semi‐institutional settings. The study focussed upon the attitudes, assumptions, and sentiments which serve as a basis for a communication between staff members and patients. Beginning with a series of open‐ended interviews with staff members of a 400‐bed private nursing home, the researchers identified the range of attitudes existing among the staff. Instruments were constructed from these interviews, and the researchers attempted to identify, through factor analysis of staff attitudes and patient evaluations of staff, those attitudes which characterized staff members who were perceived as having beneficial effects on the pat

摘要:
AbstractThis paper is basedon a study of American newspaper readability in metropolitan and non‐metropolitan areas. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between front page readability level of metropolitan and non‐metropolitan newspapers. There was a significant difference in readability level between metropolitan and non‐metropolitan newspaper articles. With the exception of the local news, the non‐metropolitan means were higher for each of these classifications. There was no significant difference between metropolitan and non‐metro‐politan Associated Press articles. However, there was a significant difference between United Press International metropolitan and non‐metropolitan articles. United Press International articles in non‐metropolitan papers were more di

摘要:
AbstractA study was doneto determine the utility of recovering the discarded segments which are a necessary product of speech time compression using the method of Fairbanks. In this study the discarded segments were saved, and the speech signal processed digitally in such a way that the discarded segments could be played into one ear while the remaining segments were presented to the other ear. It was found that this manner of dichotic presentation was more intelligible than the customary manner of diotic presentation for several compression ratios and discard intervals. Nevertheless, it remained to be seen if the improvement was due to the dichotomizing of the signal, of the listener, or both. This study revealed that both are necessary.

摘要:
AbstractThis study examinedthe effects of two types of analogy on attitude change and source credibility. Subjects were exposed to either a literal, figurative, or no‐analogy message. Comparison of attitude change scores and terminal source credibility ratings by message condition indicated that both the literal and figurative versions produced greater attitude change than the no‐analogy version. Differences in source credibility ratings were not attributable to the use of analogy. The authors discuss the need for further research in the area and present two tentative explanations of their findi
