ZusammenfassungWährend der postnatalen Entwicklung findet bei der Ratte eine schritt‐weise Reduktion des distalen Abschnittes des Filum terminale statt, der eine Verlagerung der Endampulle nach vorn vorausgeht. In dieser wird der RF aufgelöst. Nach Durchschneidung des Filum terminale verschwindet der Reissnersche Faden im caudalen abgetrennten Abschnitt. Die Durchschneidung hat keinen Einfluß auf das normale Schwanzwachstum.AbstractThe distal part of the filum terminale is continuously reduced during the postnatal development in young rats.Simultaneously with the reduction the ampulla terminalis is placed in cranial direction. AbstractFluorescein‐labelled antibodies against ovine prolactin have been used to localize the prolactin‐producing cells in the pituitary gland of the roach,Leuciscus rutilus. Two methods of protein tracing have been used: the direct and the indirect. In the direct method gammaglobulin fractions of rabbit‐antisera were conjugated with fluorescein‐isothiocyanate. Frozen sections of the pituitary gland were treated with conjugate. Cells with a content of prolactin gave off green fluorescence. Conjugate made from normal rabbit‐serum failed to give this result. Blocking‐experiments were also used to control the conjugate fluorescence. In the indirect method sheep‐anti‐rabbit‐gammaglobulin was labelled with fluorescein. First the sections of the hypophysis were treated with antiserum from rabbits. After careful rinsing the sections were exposed to the dyemarked sheep‐anti‐rabbit‐gammaglobulin. For orientation in the pituitary gland histological staining was carried out in parallel to that by fluorescence.The investigation has shown that the erythrosinophilic cells in the rostral pars distalis contained prolactin. AbstractIn the spinal cord ofLampetra planerineurosecretion and glial secretion could be demonstrated with histochemical methods and the aid of the electron microscope.Neurosecretion is present in either all or some “dorsal cells” which are scattered along the whole spinal cord. These cells have the characteristic fine structure of highly active secretory neurons. The cells produce three types of secretory material. One not bound to vesicles in form of a finely granulated substance, a second one in spherical, uniformely electron‐dense elementary vesicles with a diameter of 100–140 nm, and a third one in vesicles of the monoamine type.In the most caudal part of the spinal cord glial secretion is present. Groups of glial cells produce a fine, granulated material and release it into the adjacent intercellular space. From there the material extends into other intercellular spaces of the spinal cord.We are of the opinion that the “dorsal cells” are forerunners of the cells of Dahlgren in higher vertebrates and that the neurosecretion and glial secretion in the spinal cord of lampreys demonstrate very primitive

AbstractImproved fixation of ganglia of the central nervous system ofPeriplaneta americanaandSchistocerca gregariafor silver staining by Power's (1943) modification of the Bodian protargol method is given by alcoholic Bouin aged for at least 40 days at 60° C. During impregnation of sections, increased copper and decreased pH give paler staining, more selective for nerve fibres. Prolonging impregnation from 24 to 48 hours weakens the stain and decreases selectivity. The intensity of the stain depends chiefly upon the amount of unreduced (developable) silver combined with the tissues; selectivity is determined mainly by the number and distribution of the reduced silver particles (‘nuclei’). In development, increased sodium sulphite gives more differentiation, increased hydroquinone gives less. Optimum developer composition depends upon impregnation, and thick sections need more differentiation than thinner ones. Within limits, change in one of the factors that control staining can be balanced by changes in others, but by suitable adjustment of the conditions the result can be varied from almost total staining of nerve fibres, for general neuroanatomy, to highly selective staining for tracing individual fi

AbstractThepars distalisof adult minks were examined by light microscopy. Seasonal variations in cytology and the effect of photostimulation and various drugs were studied.Six types of glandular cells were identified by their structural and staining qualities. To each has been tentatively assigned an endocrine function.Problems in the interpretation of experiments involving administration of drugs are discussed. Discussion is also devoted to the difficulties in demonstrating the mink prolactin cells.

AbstractThe morphology and structural peculiarities of the androgenic gland inOcypoda platytarsisare described. Three types of histologically different cells have been noticed. The histological variations have been attributed to the secretory cycle. Evidence is given for the amitotic division of the cells. Evidences are also given for the holocrine activity of the cells. It has been shown that the growth of the male reproductive system parallels that of the androgenic gland.

AbstractThe pituitary vascular system ofAnolis carolinensisis similar to that of other lizards. Distinct portal vessels connect the primary plexus of the median eminence with the secondary plexus of the pars distalis. The primary plexus has some connections with the neural lobe. The neural lobe plexus is fed by separate arteries, and drains into the pars intermedia. The latter lobe receives its blood supply by this route. The pituitary is drained into the vena retrohypophysea. The findings are discussed in relation to existing theories regarding the neurovascular control of the pars intermedia.

AbstractTwo neurosecretory centers, nucleus preopticus (NPO) and nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT), are distinguished in the hypothalamus ofClarias batrachusL. The cell bodies of NPO are grouped into nucleus preopticus magnocellularis (NPM) and nucleus preopticus parvocellularis (NPP). The NLT is recognised into three divisions: pars rostralis, pars medialis and pars ventrolateralis. The neurons of both the NLT and NPO are aldehyde‐fuchsin (AF) positive. The axons from NPO run into four or five bundles ventrolaterally and caudally for some distance before all of them from either side join ventromedially into a single thick cord of neurosecretory fibers which finally enters the pars intermedia to form the neurointermediate lobe. The fibers from NLT, which are separate from the neurosecretory fibers of the NPO, anastomose in the region of the pars distalis. The neurosecretory material (NSM) of NPO is transported by axonal route whereas that of NLT is by axonal as well as ependymovascular pathways.Hypophysectomy results in the increase of AF‐positive material in the neurons of NPO shortly after the operation, but later on, the material begins to deplete in them. The AF‐positive material at the cut end of neurosecretory fibers, however, accumulates. RésuméNous avons préconisé (1964) la technique à l'hématoxyline au plomb (H.Pb) de MacConaill pour l'étude des cellules corticotropes des Téléostéens. Nous confirmons la validité de cette coloration chez la Tanche, le Poisson‐Chat et la Carpe soumise au jeûne, en fonction des réactions de l'interrénal. Divers auteurs ont étendu cette conclusion à d'autres espèces de Téléostéens, un Cyclostome et deux Amphibiens. La réaction est négative chez les Oiseaux; chez les Mammifères, la spécificité de cette technique n'a pas encore été vérifée.Chez quelques Téléostéens, Oiseaux et Mammifères, l'H.Pb semble également utile pour la mise en évidence des cellules sécrétant l'inter‐médine. Ces résultats conduisent Solciaet al. (1969) et Nouetet al. (1969) à proposer la technique de l'H.Pb pour la mise en évidence des cellules de la série APUD (Pearse 1969).Les données très fragmentaires obtenues jusqu'ici dans la série des Vertébrés doivent inciter à n'utiliser cette coloration signalétique qu'avec prudence. En effet, chez certaines espèces, les cellules LH‐ICSH se colorent intensément, et chez l'Anguille, les cellules à prolactine en état d'hypoactivité se chargent de fines granulations bleu noir. Il est donc indispensable de vérifier les fonctions corticotrope et mélanophorotrope des cellules éventuellement colorables par l'H.Pb par d'autres critères, topographiques chez les Téléostéens, morphologiques, tinctoriaux, mais surtout par une analyse expérimentale.AbstractIn 1964, the lead‐haematoxylin technique (H.Pb) of MacConaill was introduced for the staining of the corticotrophic cells in various teleost species. Since then, the validity of this staining was corroborated in other teleost fishes (tench, catfish, carp after a longterm starvation), and probably also for a cyclostome and two amphibian species; however, this staining gives negative results in various birds and its specificity has not yet been confirmed in mammals.In some teleosts, birds and mammals, this technique is useful to demonstrate the melanocyte‐stimulating hormone secreting cells. According to these results, Solciaet al. (1969) and Nouetet al. (1969) suggest that this staining technique is generally suitable to identify the APUD cells (Pearse 1969). However, H.Pb is mostly a mere histological stain, although it demonstrates the carboxyl groups of proteins (Solciaet al.). Data collected in various vertebrates indicate that great caution is necessary when one wants to give a functional significance to this staining reaction. In some species (dog,Pyromelana) the LH‐ICSH cells are deeply stained with H.Pb. In the eel, an accumulation of fine blue black granules occurs when prolactin cells are hypoactive, as in sea water. It appears necessary to verify the function, either corticotrophic or melanophoric, of the H.Pb + cells of thepars distaliswith other criteria: topography in teleosts, morphology, tinctorial reactions, but mainly with an experimental analys
