摘要:
&NA;The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has always contained the provision that early intervention services for eligible infants, toddlers, and their families be provided in natural environments. The reemphasis on natural environments in the 1997 reauthorization of the IDEA, however, has caused states and early intervention programs to increase efforts to ensure that Part C services provide and support learning experiences within the context of the child's family and community. This emphasis on natural environments and, in some cases, the move away from segregated, clinic‐based service delivery models have been challenging. This article presents 10 common myths about service delivery in natural environments and the literature available to refute them.

摘要:
&NA;The core principle of infant mental health is creating a healthy emotional attachment with the primary caregiver. Because many young children spend time with caregivers other than parents, all the individuals in their lives need to support their emotional development and be able to recognize early signs of unmet emotional needs. Principles of infant mental health common across caregivers and programs include strengthening the caregiver‐child relationship through focusing on the importance of human touch and proximity to the caregiver, responsive caregiving, continuity of care, and emotional nurturance and comfort. This article addresses strategies for infusing these principles into practical everyday practices in four areas: child care, home visiting programs, early intervention, and the judicial system.

摘要:
&NA;Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an inherited genetic disorder resulting in developmental delays and challenging behaviors. Reliable, accurate tests are available for carrier, prenatal, or newborn screening. Since genetic screening is not routinely offered, FXS is typically identified through behavioral observation. The variability and subtlety in the expression of FXS make early identification challenging. The article reviews the research and recommends a set of characteristics to enhance the identification process. While a checklist alone is unlikely to improve identification during the infant‐toddler years, it may alert professionals to more obvious cases, help confirm parental and professional suspicions over several visits, and yield more fine‐grained observations and precise comparisons.

摘要:
&NA;Every early intervention model is based on a set of principles that reflects assumptions about how children develop and learn. Parent‐child interaction offers an especially powerful focus and context for early intervention by providing an opportunity to support the experiences of the two members of this interaction dyad. This article describes one model for enhancing developmental opportunities for the child by expanding on and strengthening the parent‐child relationship in a group environment.

摘要:
&NA;There are major gaps in provision of services to vulnerable preschool populations that comprehensively link a child's strengths and challenges across health, home, developmental, social, and community systems. The purpose of this article is to describe the use of measures of functional assessment of essential activities in selfcare, mobility, communication, and social cognition in preschool children. Psychometric properties of the various tests are described. By developing a common language that simultaneously celebrates developmental accomplishments and addresses the ecology of enablement, early childhood professionals can prioritize comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies that optimize family supports and community participation.

摘要:
&NA;This article presents executive managers of early childhood programs a focused and detailed method for providing meaningful supervision to program administrators of urban and suburban early intervention programs that provide a multitude of service delivery models. The Monthly Report and Quality Program Indicators provide anecdotal and statistical information about employee concerns, facility management, curriculum implementation, inservice development, community outreach, enrollment, billing, and evaluations. The information in these reports provides an integrative approach to supervision while providing the basis for improved site‐based supervision and goal setting for program personnel.
