AbstractA quotation from the life story of August Santleben tells of his obtaining and transporting by wagon the Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico, iron meteorite of nearly 1 3/4 tons' weight. He took it from Chihuahua,viaFt. Davis, Ft. Stockton, and San Antonio, to Luling, Texas, whence it was shipped, apparently by rail and water (through Galveston), to the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The account fills a gap in the history of the meteorite, throws some light on the conflicting stories of its early owners and possessors, and mentions the unique doctrine that all meteorites are the inherent property of the government and not subject to individual ownership.

AbstractThe Piñon, New Mexico, siderite came into the writer's hands in May, 1932. The meteorite was a rather shapeless mass weighing about 17.85 kgs. (39 1/4 lbs.). It proved to be a nickel‐rich ataxite, with a nickel content of 16.32%, according to a chemical analysis by F. G. Hawley, which is given in full. AbstractA list of 82 new discoveries (S.R.M. provisional nos. 101–182) has been added to the catalog of the known meteoritic falls of the world since August, 1936. (See ref. no. 1,post.) Outstanding features of this list are 5 authentic reports of houses which have been struck by falling meteorites. The discovery of a new meteoritic crater has been made, and a meteorite was found while a hole was being dug for a post. It is pointed out that the major portion of these new discoveries has resulted from the systematic search which is being carried on in the Great Plains region of the United States by and under the direction of the American Meteorite Laboratory of Denver, Colorad

AbstractThe Monahans, Texas, meteorite belongs to the Cape Group of ataxites and was discovered from the rust stains in the sand above it. The meteorite was in‐closed in a loosely adherent oxide crust. The metal core was almost divided in halves by a deep fissure. When this fissure was completed, a fracture like that of armor plate was produced, although the metal is malleable. Etching produces a dull but not a very dark surface, with indistinct irregular patches visible at certain angles. Some slices produced cuts in carborundum‐cloth grinding disks. It is believed that these cuts may have been produced by small diamonds. The rust is blackish‐brown, lamellar, and magnetic, and has a specific gravity of about 3.1. It contains some residual metal and consists of 2 bodies with the same structure as the metal. A green stain is probably zaratite. AbstractTaenite is really 2 substances. Of these, orthotaenite is a nickel‐rich alloy whose composition is uncertain but seems likely to be Fe2Ni. This formula is based on a statistical study of 26 analyses, and the fact that the iron‐nickel frequency diagram has maxima indicative of this composition. The other constituent, metataenite, is a duplex substance composed probably of an intergrowth of orthotaenite and kamacite. In 9 (1 doubtful) out of 12 octahedrites examined, the taenite lamellae were composed of a dark central band of metataenite, with a band of orthotaenite on either side. The bands are either too thin or too thick to show this arrangement in the other 3 cases. The orthotaenite results from diffusion of nickel from the kamacite, while metataenite is a plessite‐like residue left between the bands, but, because of a higher nickel content, is much finer‐grained than plessite. Metataenite is, nevertheless, more soluble than orthotaenite. The black color is due to the removal of the more soluble constituent (kamacite) by the acid. The resulting surface is optically equivalent to a powder, and hence dark‐colored. The separation of taenite lamellae from Canyon Diablo, Arizona, into 3 layers was accomplished, and the thicknesses of the whole lamella and the 3 constituent layers

AbstractA siderite discovered near Goose Lake in northern Modoc County, California, on 1938 October 13, by Messrs. Joseph Secco, Clarence A. Schmidt, and Ira Iverson of Oakland, has recently been identified and just been recovered, through the coöperation of five fellows of the Society for Research on Meteorites, namely, Dr. and Mrs. H. H. Nininger, Professor Earle G. Linsley, Dr. Robert W. Webb, and the writer. This meteorite is by far the largest found up to date in California, the official weight being 2573 pounds (1167 kilograms). The overall dimensions of the mass, which is a medium octahedrite, are 3 ft. 10 in. × 2 ft. 4 1/2 in. × 1 ft. 8 in.
