Power functions can represent a variety of financial and physical phenomena. For example, capital equipment costs are often represented by power functions. In this work, a duality theory for mathematical programs is developed, having power functions in both the objective function and constraints. This has computational significance. Applications are made to engineering design and inventory theory. Some analytic results are possible.

A realization theory is developed and the ‘generalized frequency response’ is presented for an input-output map introduced in a previous work. Relations with the realization of finite Volterra series are outlined. A simple example is given to show that the new representations have improved convergence properties.

The application is presented of an algebraic type controller that is Wiener-Hopf optimal. The design method is applied to a double-effect evaporator. The controller directly tackles the intrinsic problem of process interaction, load disturbance, plant saturation and measurements noise: whether the plant is stable or unstable, an exact optimal controller is attainable. The only limitation to this is the stability of the computation algorithm. Software algorithms and computer programs have been developed to facilitate the computation of the polynomial matrix algebra involved in finding the controller.

A new efficient checkpointing strategy for a transaction oriented database system that operates in a stable on-line environment is proposed. Detailed experimental results are reported to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of different system parameters.

Following Whitfield's (1987) discovery that established linear least squares procedures used in the synthesis of transfer functions generally lead to biased parameter estimates, the present work analyses in detail how such bias arises from imperfections in the frequency response data. Procedures are classified according to their order accuracy. A simple improvement to the well-known Sanathanan and Koerner procedure is given.

A method is presented for the design of an observer capable of reconstructing a single linear functional of the states of a linear time-varying system. The method is based on a canonical transformation of uniformly observable time-varying multi-variable system. It is shown that this canonical form, along with certain pre-specified structures of observer coefficient matrices, leads to a systematic and straightforward procedure for designing a functional observer of minimal order.

The existence of slow and monotone solutions with respect to a continuous pre-order is proved for differential inclusions defined on a closed convex subset of R4. First we examine the ‘projected system’, and prove that it is equivalent to a differential variational inequality. We then establish the existence of monotone trajectories. Subsequently, we prove the existence of slow monotone solutions for a class of differential inclusions, satisfying a Nagumo-type condition. Finally we prove a convergence result.

The stabilization problem of a class of linear time-invariant, discrete systems with additive-type uncertainties is discussed. The dynamical system contains uncertain elements that are known to belong to prescribed compact bounding intervals. In addition, the system to be corrupted by uncertain bounded inputs is considered. A two-part switching feedback controller structure is developed in order to stabilize the uncertain dynamical system. The form of the controller (a linear part + a non-, linear part) guarantees global uniform ultimate boundedness under certain hypotheses on the bounded system uncertainties, as well as on bounded admissible additive disturbances. The performance of the uncertain system under the application of the proposed controller is compared with that using a purely linear controller. The proposed system gives superior performance.

A new application of the Lagrange multipliers, obtained from a fixed-interval smoothing algorithm, for identification is presented. They can be used as indicators of time variation of process dynamics. The algorithm is derived by minimizing a quadratic performance index. Results show the effectiveness of Lagrange multipliers in tracking time variation, when the model is estimated from short records.

With the aid of the maximum principle (Butkovosky 1969) and using the finite difference method, a theoretical investigation on the strategy for achieving a beneficial rise in temperature of a tumour due to induced microwaves is considered by controlling the surface temperature of the tissue consisting of skin, fat, muscle and tumour layers. A numerical calculation is evaluated for typical tissue.
