The stability of the trivial equilibrium solution of a class of non-linear differential equations with a non-stationary absolutely integrable random coefficient is studied. The mean square stability of random systems is discussed and stability theorems of Bertram and Sarachik (1959) are stated. It is shown that the equilibrium null solution is mean square stable under some mild conditions. Some examples are also considered.

Analytical results relating errors in transfer-function coefficients for a second-order model to errors in the resulting time-domain response, via the integral of the squared error (I.S.E.), are presented. Such information is valuable in assessing the application of transfer-function approximations, such as the continued fraction expansion. The nature of the transfer function, i.e. overdamped or underdamped, has a significant effect on the time-domain I.S.E. Both impulse and step responses are considered.

This paper examines a two-facility inventory problem where one facility is the sole supplier of the other. The system operates in a stochastic environment and employs a continuous review (Q, r) inventory policy. The system must service expected demand for some product over an infinite time horizon and no backlogging of excess demand is permitted. The objective is to minimize expected total system cost per unit time over the infinite time horizon. Optimal and near optimal solutions are obtained with computational results reported for the case of gamma distributed (integer modulus) demand over lead time.

In this paper it is shown that the method ofD-partition, in conjunction with a decoupling state transformation technique, can be used to investigate the stabilizability by linear state feedback of a class of production-inventory systems incorporating unfilled-order backlogs in which the control policies are retarded by finite time-delays. The theory is illustrated by the presentation of typical transient and steady-state response characteristics of controlled production-inventory systems of this class.
