One of the basic problems of the theory of control in complex systems involves determining the circumstances under which a set of control parameters can effectively manipulate a much larger number of degrees of freedom in the controlled system. Such a control capability obviously requires the presence of additional constraints relating the quantities to be controlled. We explore this general question in the context of a specific situation; namely, in terms of an algorithm recently proposed to compute the three-dimensional structures of folded polypeptides from their amino acid sequences. In this algorithm, a small number of average geometric properties (the control parameters) are utilized to determine a much larger set of inter-residue distances in the folded structure. We derive the specific condition which assures that the algorithm converges pointwise to the correct structure, which in this case turns out to involve relating rates of change of coordinates to increments in the distances consistent with a particular set of values for the control parameters. Some further implications of this kind of result are briefly discussed.

An identification algorithm for open-loop non-linear systems composed of linear dynamic and static non-linear elements is developed for the case of gaussian non-white inputs. It is shown that correlation analysis provides estimates of the parametrized linear and second-order kernels from which the parameters of the linear subsystems can be obtained.

The objective of this paper is to develop the method of detection of the abrupt change and the trend in electroencephalographic data which is a non-stationary times series. In this paper, the Kalman filter method is applied to the detection of the abrupt change and the trend. It is shown that the detection of the abrupt change can be improved by introducing a feed-back parameter in the Kalman filter gain. For the detection of the slow changes or the trend of the time series, a spectral error measure is applied to the Kalman filter. The amplitude and the frequency changes of the time series are then extracted by the smoothing of the Kalman filter method. Numerical examples illustrate the availability of the filter and verify the methods developed here.

In this paper, we develop a design model for a system of an automated warehouse with aisles, between which there is a stacker crane running through both vertically and horizontally at one command. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear mixed integer programme in which the cost of the system is minimized with required functions of the automated warehouse. A method of solution is given on the basis of non-linear programming techniques. We also make a trade-off analysis between cost and functions. By doing this, automated warehouses can be designed more flexibly and more efficiently. Some experiments prove the efficiency of the method.

Algorithms of the method of least squares that are intended for estimating the parameters of non-linear autoregression processes are considered. A class of nonlinear difference equations is isolated which describes autoregression processes for which MLS estimates of parameters in these equations are found to be strongly consistent.

The dynamic behaviour of an actual production-inventory control system, designed for a diffusion department, is analysed by means of classical control theory. The actual control rule acts on the basis of norms for the production progress derived from the application of the line-of-balance technique to the production-inventory system. Attention is paid to the steady-state behaviour, the impulse response and the variance amplification of the controlled system. The cause of the poor dynamic performance observed after implementation of the system in practice is releaved. Especially the variance amplification can be decreased without a general loss of performance with respect to other criteria. An alternative control rule is derived from the application of design notions from classical control theory to the production-inventory problem. The new control rule shows an improved performance in some respects over the actual control rule. The case presented shows that some serious errors in production-inventory control design can be avoided through analysis by means of classical control theory.

It has been previously shown by Kohonen and others how a linear system can be trained to associate two deterministic pattern sets, with applications to learning algorithms and adaptive systems. When noise is added to the training patterns, the algorithm is close to stochastic approximation algorithms with constant gain. Some results are given here concerning the convergence of the algorithm with different assumptions on the training pattern statistics and the gain, and a stochastic counterpart is given to the basic deterministic algorithm in case an exact association exists. It is established how the non-zero residual error, resulting from a gain sequence not tending to zero, can be made arbitrarily small using redundancy. It is also shown how the optimal associative mapping in the noisy case is related to the basic mapping reported earlier.

A generalization of the Routh method of reduction is introduced for obtaining stable reduced order models. The reduced models may be ‘ biased ’ in the sense that they may approximate the initial transient response of the high order system more closely than the steady-state response, and vice-versa. Given the desired order of the reduced model, the method of this paper produces a number of stable reduced models which approximate the high order system. The method is easily extended to multi-variable systems. Examples are given to illustrate the method and to make comparisons with other methods of reduction.
