A method of analysis for a two-station closed queueing network model with blocking is described. A practical application of this method is presented for an airfleet operation and maintenance system consisting of a flying base where operationally ready aircraft are stationed for training purposes and a repair depot where the aircraft are overhauled. The blocking occurs at the repair depot due to non-availability of hanger space. It is shown that because of the blocking, the availability of aircraft at the flying base is increased but the productivity remains unchanged. This is due to the fact that blocking changes the arrivals at the repair depot. The two-station closed queueing network with blocking is analysed using an equivalent two-station closed queueing network without blocking. Numerical examples illustrate the utility of this analysis.

A method for solving the linear ordinary differential equations of the two-point boundary-value problem using polynomial series is discussed. The linear ordinary differential equation of the two-point boundary-value problems are reduced to the linear functional differential equation of the initial value problem. It is known that any polynomial series basis vector can be transformed to Taylor polynomials by the use of a suitable transformation and Taylor series have the simplest operational properties. The solution of linear two-point boundary-value problems via Taylor series is first obtained and this solution using other polynomial series is then calculated by transforming the properties of the Taylor series to other polynomial series. The method is simple and convenient for digital computation. Illustrative examples are given.

In technical databases a great deal of data are usually missing, diminishing their usefulness severely. Unfortunately only a part of the missing data can generally be reconstructed according to deterministic or statistic relations between the data. The reconstruction of data in the case of technical nets is investigated, based on vague rules, and an expression is given for the certainty factors of the derived data using the theory of fuzzy sets.

A chance-constrained goal programming model is developed for the direct foreign investment decisions of U.S.-based multi-national companies. Goals, objectives and constraints, which are unique to direct foreign investment decisions, are included in the model. The model also considers economic exposure of exchange-rate risk. A solution procedure is suggested. The model is illustrated by a numerical example that includes sensitivity analysis.

A two-criteria dynamic stochastic decision problem in separable Hilberi space with two different information patterns is discussed. The cost functional is assumed to be quadratic. Under the perfect measurement information pattern, three types of disturbance—control-dependent noise, state-dependent noise, and purely additive noise—are taken into account. Under the one-step delay observation sharing pattern and the assumption of underlying gaussian statistics, some existing theorems in finite dimensional space are extended. The explicit solutions are derived for both cases. The results in this paper can be used to study the partial differential games when the system is specialized to discrete-time distributed parameter system. Furthermore, some results are new even in a finite-dimensional space setting.

A discrete-time adaptive predictive control system is proposed for compensating the unmeasurable and time-varying disturbance. The disturbance is compensated by two mechanisms. One is the disturbance compensation based on the result from an observer for the unknown disturbance and the other is a feedback loop with a predictor for the output. This system can be interpreted within the framework of a 2-port system recently proposed by Stephanopoulos and Huang. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the performance and robustness of this proposed system.

Ensembles with non-equiprobable states—which have been studied in a previous work (Auger 1984)—are applied to various empirical and theoretical distributions. The equilibrium distributions are calculated by the Lagrange method. Firstly, we determine the state probabilities necessary to obtain empirical distributions, such as Pareto's iaw. Secondly, we calculate equilibrium distributions for an ethotogical example concerning activity frequencies of animals. We also study an ecological example in population dynamics concerning the age-class distribution of animals belonging to a given population. This method can be used either to explain empirical equilibrium distributions or to calculate theoretical equilibrium distributions from chosen graphs of transition states.

Identification of discrete–time non–linear stochastic systems which can be represented by a rational input–output model is considered. A prediction–error parameter estimation algorithm is developed and a criterion is derived using results from the theory of hypothesis testing to determine the correct model structure. The identification of a simulated system, and a heat exchanger are included to illustrate the algorithms.

A robustness stability study of discrete feedback systems controlled by a saturating actuator is presented. It is proved that the robustness stability to process para-metrical deviations and dynamics changes may be improved under sufficient conditions with an appropriate design of the saturating device. Some extensions of the application of the formulation to adaptive control are also given.
