摘要:
This paper presents a method for determining the zeros of individual elements of the transfer function matrix relating the outputs to the inputs of a linear, time-invariant, multivariate system. The zeros are obtained as the eigenvalues of a matrix whose order is the same as the number of zeros. This matrix is derived from the state and output equations of the system by a series of coordinate transformations. Apart from the determination of eigenvalues of a matrix, the coordinate transformations are the only major calculations involved in this method. Hence the method is computationally fast and accurate. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the method.

The construction of minimal-order observers for estimating vector functions of the states of linear multivariable systems is considered. By means of geometric arguments, the observer design problem is reduced to a static optimization problem in certain observer parameters. A systematic procedure for designing minimal-order stable observers is proposed that is based on a new lower bound on the required observer order, a special canonical form of the observer matrix that ensures any prescribed degree of stability, and a gradient-type function minimization algorithm. A modified procedure for designing minimal-order observers having arbitrarily specified poles is also described. The techniques developed are illustrated by means of numerical examples.

This paper presents an information theory approach to the production smoothing through the application of rate-distortion function. This approach will be significant in the exploitation of a new aspect of production smoothing. The recommended procedure is simple and may be effective in the case of production smoothing with stochastic demands having little prior information.

This report considers the interdependence of the two problems of system optimization and parameter estimation when the system is described by mathematical models containing uncertain parameters and whose structure is also uncertain or deliberately simplified in order to facilitate the solution of the optimization problem. Two computational procedures, produced by previous investigators, are described which combine the two problems into a single joint problem formulated as a two-level structure. The first procedure combines the two problems using a parametric formulation and the second technique replaces the identification problem by an inequality constraint. Following previous work in this field it is claimed that these two procedures have advantages over the two-step approach often employed in practice where the two problems are each considered separately and solved recursively. In addition, methods for decomposing the combined problem into two subproblems representing modified optimization and identification problems using multilevel optimization techniques are reviewed. The alternative techniques are exemplified by considering their application to optimization problems defined by a quadratic performance criterion and a linear mathematical model, and also to the maximization of profit from a chemical reactor described by a non-linear mathematical model which has been deliberately simplified in order to reduce computational requirements.

The paper deals with optimization approaches in vertical transport, and with criteria for optimal control of single-unit and multi-unit elevator systems. The advantages and drawbacks for different performance indices are reviewed, and a performance index unifying all advantages is indicated. Three optimal-control modes, differing in mode of feed of the waiting and admission information, are suggested. The optimal travel and admission policy is obtained with the aid of multivariate functional equations. Also presented are an algorithm for the functional equations and an identification method for the variables affecting the optimal policy. The relevant relationships are reviewed, and an on-line control method is proposed. Results and examples are given in Appendix I, and standard collective systems are compared in Appendix 2.

A large-scale dynamic system is considered as composed of a number of interconnected subsystems. Input and output reachability of the system is defined as a structural counterpart to controllability and observability. When the system is subject to structural perturbations due to on—off participation of the subsystems, conditions are provided for reachability to be connective, that is, to be invariant under the perturbations. The concept of input and output reachability leads naturally to formulations of input and output decentralized systems. It is shown that such systems are connectively reachable, which is an important structural property of ‘ large ’ and ‘ small ’ decentralized systems alike. Finally, a procedure is outlined to transform a centralized system into an input or output decentralized system with distinct inputs or outputs assigned to each subsystem separately.

The converse of Schwarz inequality is applied to the analysis of an instability-related property (hereafter called Property P) of feedback systems. For systems containing a linear time invariant part with a non-linear (time varying) gain in the feedback path, the conditions for the Property P to hold are given ill ‘ multiplier ’ form; for more general systems, these conditions are expressed in terms of the passivity and finite gains of certain operators derived from the system (forward and feedback) operators.
