摘要:
The Lotka—Volterra differential equations describing predator-prey interactions are extended to include eddy diffusion and advection. A general solution is given, then applied to a plankton system containing two species. Diffusion damps population fluctuations, and a periodic advective velocity introduces seasonal changes similar to those observed in nature.

摘要:
A multi-state deterministic system controlled via a noisy Binary Symmetric Channel (BSC) is modelled by an equivalent Markov chain. The system performs a random walk whose mean deviation from zero is numerically equal to the expected number of steps between zero crossings, and whose entropy is equal to the average amount of transmitted control information between zero crossings. Simple expressions are found for the received control information and for the mutual information via the BSC.

This paper gives error bounds when a stochastic process or a deterministic signal is sampled and reconstruction is done either by piecewise straight lines or cubic splines. In the case of cubic splines the error bounds derived here take into account the number of samples. Using the results presented here it is possible to select the sampling interval for a given error.

摘要:
A method is presented for estimating parameters of chemical reactor models. It is assumed that the process can be represented by a system of quasilinear partial differential equations, with two-point boundary values. The Green's function is used to transform the differential to integral equations. The unknown coefficients can then be identified by gradient search. The algorithm of the Fast Fourier Transform may be used to numerically compute some of the integrals involved. The FFT, sharply reducing the computation time, makes the method effective. Numerical applications are dealt with in detail, showing that the method is promising.

In this paper a method with wide applicability is outlined for the hierarchical control of large non-linear interconnected dynamical systems with separable cost functions, The method is applied to the problem of optimal control of synchronous machine excitation. The system considered comprises a single generator connected by a transmission line to an infinite bus-bar and for this system the trajectory of the optimal voltage to be applied to the field winding is computed using the two-level method.

摘要:
n this paper the Brunovsky canonical form is used to synthesize piecewise-constant control policies for a class of production-inventory systems which consist of a set of production-inventory sub-systems connected in cascade. It is shown that each production-inventory sub-system can be controlled in isolation but that control policies based on this approach lead to undesirable transient behaviour. The alternative approach whereby the control policies are formulated for the composite system leads to improved transient behaviour.

摘要:
The stochastic version of Pontryagin's maximum principle is applied to determine an optimal maintenance policy of equipment subject to random deterioration. The deterioration of the equipment with age is modelled as a random process. Next the model is generalized to include random catastrophic failure of the equipment. The optimal maintenance policy is derived for two special probability distributions of time to failure of the equipment, namely, exponential and Weibull distributions Both the salvage value and deterioration rate of the equipment are treated as state variables and the maintenance as a control variable. The result is illustrated by an example.
