摘要:
This paper is concerned with the application of optimal control techniques to ecological systems. In particular, the control of pollution of water in a river stream is considered. The variables to be controlled are the concentration of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and the level of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) in the water. This is proposed to be achieved by controlled dumping of industrial effluents and/or artificial aeration. These constitute the controls. A realistic determination of the optimum values of these controls is subject to several performance criteria relating to water quality. Since some of these criteria are contradictory the problem is tackled (unlike previous investigators) from the point of view of a multi-cost system. Recently published theory on multi-cost system optimization is used. Numerical examples are presented.

摘要:
Two-point boundary-value problems (TPBVP) are frequently encountered in almost every branch of engineering and physical sciences. The conventional numerical solution of TPBVP is based on a trial and error iterative procedure, in order that missing initial conditions be obtained. The starting or guessed missing initial conditions must be, however, close to the correct ones before the iterative procedure will converge. Imbedding techniques, such as invariant imbedding and the continuation method, have the major advantage of reducing TPBVP into initial-value problems. In this paper the two imbedding techniques are presented and discussed as to their absolute and relative merits and shortcomings.

摘要:
In this paper, a continuous-time model of a production-inventory system which includes an allowance for the stimulation of sales by advertising is considered. It is shown that the theory of tracking systems can be used for the synthesis of control policies such that the system outputs always tend towards the managerial command inputs at a predetermined rate. The theory is illustrated by the presentation of the results of computer-simulation studies of the response of a particular system of this class to typical command inputs.

In this paper criteria are derived which guarantee that the effect of disturbances on the outputs of a linear feedback system can be reduced as much ac desired by means of a suitable state feedback. It is also shown how a suitable feedback strategy can be calculated to achieve the desired degree of decoupling between outputs and disturbances.

摘要:
This paper is the continuation of two articles which appeared in this journal, and presents an approach to the thermodynamics of general systems via information theory. It is composed of two parts. In the first part one proposes a modification of the initial Shannon information theory which takes into account the point of view of the receiver. The concepts of ‘ effective entropy ’ and ‘ effective information ’ are given, the relation between effective information and Shannon information is exhibited. We then obtain the concept of negative information which may explain the practical phenomenon of information loss. In the second part of the paper, the interpretation of the results of the first part provides a model of state equation which would apply in the thermodynamics of general systems. The counterpart of perfect gas, the perfect system, is investigated via evolution principles and it is emphasized that the results so obtained agree with some practical phenomena. Some suggestions for further research are given in the conclusion.

Control of quasistatic distributed parameter (d.p.) systems is considered in this paper. Singular perturbation techniques and calculus of variations are the main tools employed to achieve a control procedure consisting of two iterative schemes. The procedure is applied to control the xenon oscillations found in large thermal nuclear reactors. The linearized kinetic equations which depict the xenon phenomenon along with temperature effects are first identified to be a quasistatic diffusive system and then suitable manipulations are made on them to make- direct use of the two iterative schemes for obtaining the control.

摘要:
Dynamic storage allocation concerns the problem of reserving or releasing memory space according to requirements. This is usually done by software technique. In this paper a hardware unit is introduced which performs storage allocation. An associated type of memory is proposed which gives full information regarding the free and occupied locations of the main storage. Based on this assumption, a searching algorithm is suggested and its hardware implementation is developed. The hardware unit is to work concurrently with the CPU such that the CPU time necessary for storage allocation can now be used for other computations.
