摘要:
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to identify the process requirements of the “customers,” or students, of a corporate education center. Process requirements are students expectations ofhowthey want their training needs satisfied, as opposed to the outcomes they want to achieve. Telephone interviews were conducted with 130 individuals from the research and development staff of a large corporation. The critical incident technique was used: participants were asked to describe their most satisfying and dissatisfying experiences in training or education. Participants were also asked to describe the most important characteristics of a good training organization. A content analysis of responses showed five dimensions of training or education critical to customer satisfaction, with much detailed description of these dimensions. Needs assessments that focus exclusively on training outcomes may omitprocesscharacteristics of training that are important to students, particularly when training is viewed in a “customer–supplier model that emphasizes service

摘要:
ABSTRACTWorkplace competence is necessary for organizational survival in todayws world. Development of a competent workforce must occur in spite of growing shortages of qualified people, increasing technological complexity, and increasing international competition. Workplace competence can be improved significantly by using a strategy that enables everyone from top managers to entry level workers to learn new knowledge, skills, and attitudes while they do worthwhile projects. However, three major challenges must be met before the strategy can be used widely enough to have a positive economic and social impact at local, state, regional and national levels. We must 1) improve the supply of human performance technologists capable of serving the needs of small organizations, 2) help managers learn to exert strong leadership without disrupting teamwork, and 3) build a track record so that the strategy can be adopted by the prudent business person and supported by the financial and educational communities.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe economics of competence—‐and incompetence—‐need to be understood if managers are to make prudent business decisions about improving workplace competence. I present a rationale for a typical, current cost–of–incompe–tence estimate (33% of payroll), strategies for estimating current cost–of–in–competence for a specific plant, operation, or work group, and a practical strategy for improving workplace competence. The strategy uses low–cost human performance technology to enable everyone from top managers to entry level workers to learn new knowledge, skills, and attitudes while they achieve early productivity gains that pay

摘要:
ABSTRACTFor a number of years there has been a continuing debate on the degree to which instructional design models are used in practice. A study was conducted to determine if and how practicing course developers include instructional design activities in their projects. A survey was distributed to 73 practicing course developers who were asked to indicate how often they used eleven instructional design activities in their design projects and, as appropriate, to indicate why an activity was excluded from some projects.Survey findings indicate that in practice design activities occur on an irregular basis, with some activities occurring most of the time and others more infrequently. Almost no one used all “model design activities in all of their projects. Reasons given for omitting a design activity varied, but several factors were prominent. In short, practitioners regularly use some instructional design activities in their projects but do not complete any number of other design activities in doing so. The utility and adaptability of ID models to meet practitioner needs is discussed in light of survey results.SummaryIn general, the results of this study confirm that practicing instructional designers do not complete all ID activities for all projects. Indeed, a designer may omit any number of ID activities from a project for any number of reasons. These findings suggest that no single ID model with a pre–set list of activities can accommodate all design and development projects. Rather, a more appropriate and practical approach would select only those activities that are matched to the situational requirements and constraints surrounding a given project. The theory of instructional design and development will benefit from research which contributes to an understanding of situated ID pract

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two types of instructional media presenting role models (interactive video and print) and learner sex on attitudes toward instruction. One hundred sixteen unemployed people enrolled in a job training employability skills program participated in the study. Half of the subjects viewed an interactive video presentation of role models including scenes of employers asking job applicants typical interview questions. The other half read a print–based lesson that described typical interviewing situations and questions. Results indicated that both types of instruction were equally effective in enhancing the motivation of adult learners to engage in the instruction. Results also revealed that women perceived both instructional media as significantly more attention–getting, relevant, and satisfying to complete than male subje
