ABSTRACTThe innovative software product HyperCard™ introduced in August, 1987, and today distributed free of charge with Apple Computer Incorporated's Macintosh line of computers, has sparked a flurry of interest among computer users. HyperCard represents advanced technology that, in a short time, has been put in the hands of hundreds of thousands of users, including a significant number of instructional designers and performance technologists.This article has three sections that introduce instructional designers and performance technologists to HyperCard. The first section describes just what HyperCard is and summarizes how it works. The second section presents the theoretical background of the program, from the perspectives of both cognitive psychologists and futuristic thinkers in the computing world. Finally, the third section describes three uses of HyperCard: (a) as a database management program, (b) as a vehicle for implementing hypermedia applications, and (c) as an authoring tool. ABSTRACTCase materials are excellent teaching tools. They offer variety, complement traditional methods, serve as a bridge between theory and practice, and are particularly useful in learning how to solve problems, and to evaluate and judge. Case materials are problem oriented descriptions of a believable event which provides sufficient detail to allow the readers to analyze the problem/solution process.Three levels of case materials are defined: (a) case problems, which are short “snapshot” depictions of a single incident; (b) case studies, which include information on the background and context of a situation; and (c) referenced case studies, which include citations and author insight. Development steps for case problems and studies are provided. Ways in which these materials can be used for instruction are discussed. ABSTRACTBecause business and industry training has become a major economic investment for the companies that support it, training managers are increasingly called upon to demonstrate that their interventions are not only effective but also cost‐effective. This article describes a cost‐effective methodology. It points out how cost‐effectiveness differs from cost‐benefit analysis. The technique combines meta‐analytic and simple accounting procedures to yield an index of relative cost‐effectiveness of training interventions. ABSTRACTTwo CAI programs tested the effects of plain and enhanced screen designs, with or without information about the designs, and task‐type on learning time and achievement. The enhanced versions used headings, directive cues, running heads, and graphic devices to organize and structure the content, Information about the screens described the purposes of the enhanced features and instructed the students to use those features while studying.
