摘要:
Abstract.CASE research to date has been dominated by positivistic enquiry; particularly tool building, surveys and normative writings. In contrast, there is a growing community of IS researchers developing models of IS practice that highlight the complex relationship between context and process that has to be mastered in order to develop viable information systems. This paper bridges the gap between the two bodies of knowledge by presenting a phenomenological study of CASE tool usage in a large UK manufacturing company over a four year period which shows that organizational context, tool features and usage are inextricably linked. The lessons arising from the work are presented and grounded in interpretive IS theory. The results of the work are clearly in accord with this theory, thus, showing the importance of interpretive CASE research, as a complement to positivist thinking, in bringing to light the human and organizational issues which strongly influence systems development practice

摘要:
Abstract. Many software organizations face serious problems in their attempts to make expectations and realities meet in introducing CASE technology. One promising approach to understanding CASE introduction better and to managing it more effectively has been developed by relating CASE introduction to the Capability Maturity Model (CMM). This paper reviews software process maturity as a framework for CASE introduction. The relevance of the framework is discussed and three critical questions are explored: 1) What is the role of organizational experiments in CASE introduction? 2) How do the functional characteristics of CASE technology influence CASE introduction? and 3) How does the organizational context influence CASE introduction? The aim of the paper, by way of this discussion, is to explicate the strengths and limits of software process maturity as a framework for CASE introduction, and to identify the most important supplementary issues

摘要:
Abstract. The problem of not using a methodological approach during the development process is well known and its implications for organizations clearly identified. This paper reports on a survey of information systems practice carried out to provide recent evidence about the use of development methodologies by different organizations. Data from 72 projects was obtained through a mail survey within the UK. The focus of the analysis is on the discovery of potential relationships between the use of methodologies for requirements capture and analysis and the characteristics of the projects

摘要:
Abstract.A wide variety of approaches can be applied under the heading of case study research; this paper explicitly discusses the range of the alternatives. Many papers discussing case study research emphasize one particular variation of case study research only. The current paper provides an overview of the various uses of case study research in the information systems field by describing the different ways in which case study research can be used, using examples from published IS literature for illustration, and providing references to other method papers for more detailed discussion of each alternative. Researchers are reminded that case study research can be used in the positivist and interpretivist traditions, for testing or building theory, with a single or multiple case study design, using qualitative or mixed methods. The range of case study research alternatives makes it a highly versatile research strategy for IS
