ABSTRACTComputed tomography (CT) provides in creased accuracy in tumour localisation, patient ouline data and heterogeneity information. This makes the use of CT highly desirable in 2–dimensional treatment planning. Where 3–dimensional (3–D) planning is used computed tomography (or possibly MRI) is essential. Radiotherapy departments must include dedicated CT scanners if they are to attain acceptable accuracy in simulation and treatment planning. ABSTRACTVascular filling defects are a normal feature of the thoracic myelogram. The aim of this paper was to provide criteria for differentiating the vascular filling defects in spinal AVM's from the range of filling defects seen in non‐AVM patients.Out of 940 consecutive thoracic myelograms, in non‐AVM patients, 505 had vascular filling defects. These were compared with the myelographic features of nine spinal AVM's, with regard to vessel diameter, length, tortuosity and number. None of these criteria were diagnostic of AVM's as there was overlap bet ween the vascular filling defects of AVM's and the range of normal spinal cord vessels, especial ly posterior spinal veins.However, filling defects greater than 1.4 mm diameter, which are excessively tortuous, long and. multiple, should be regarded as highly suspinous of an AVM.A lateral film is important when vascular filling defects are seen, for if these filling defects are anterior to the cord, an AVM is more lik

ABSTRACT940 water soluble constrast thoracic myelograms were examined Vascular filling defects in the thoracic subarachnoid space were seen in 54% of patients overall, and in 88% of patients in whom the film quality and contrast density were high. Vascular filling defects were, therefore, concluded to be a normal feature of the thoracic myelogram.On analysis of the characteristics of these vascular patterns, there were no significant age or sex correlates, with the exception that the younger population (0–20 years) was found to have a smaller number of these discrete patterns, they being also less tortuous, of smaller diamter and of shorter length.The majority of vascular filling defects were found to be due to posterior spinal veins. ABSTRACTSurgery is the mainstay of therapy for disorders of the common bile duct. In recent years, however, numerous radiological biliary interventional procedures have been developed. Sufficient experience with these techniques has now been accumulated such that the role of these procedures is now more clearly defined. A variety of transhepatic and transcholecystic biliary manipulations is described as an overview of the value of these procedures in difficult common bile duct disorders.

ABSTRACTOver the last ten years we have come across 24 cases of cardiac mass lesions (tumors and cysts). twenty‐one were atrial myxomas, one fibrosarcoma of the right ventricle, one mesothelioma of the pericardium and one hydatid cyst of the epicardium.Of the 21 myxomas, 17 were in the left atrium and three in the right atrium. There was no case of bilateral myxoma or right ventricular myxoma. There was no female prepondrance in our series of myxomas as 11 were males and 10 were females, The myxomas were consistently identified by cine angiocardiography and echocar‐diography. ABSTRACTIntrabiliary rupture of hepatic hydatid cysts was demonstrated by retrograde cholangio‐graphy in five cases of hydatidosis complicated by abdominal pain, jaundice or cholangitis. The bile duct contained typical laminated membrane in two cases, daughter cysts in two cases and membrane fragments in one case. In three of five cases there was marked displacement of the left and right hepatic ducts due to the location of the cyst close to the Mum of the liver. ABSTRACTSince venous collaterals were described in 1981 as causing linear densities in the perirenal fat, the list of causes of perirenal cobwebs has continued to grow. Inflammatory and neoplastic processes, particularly those originating in the kidney, may produce similar appearances.If no cause for the cobwebs is found in the kidney, extrarenal pathology should be considered, in particular acute pancreatitis and aortic aneurysm rupture.Four patients are described who all demonstrated unilateral perirenal cobwebs in association with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms. It is postulated that blood enters the perinephric fat through weak points in the renal fascia caused by the entrance of vessels.

ABSTRACT:The accuracy of ultrasonic diagnosis of parenchymal disease in renal transpiants was deter mined by comparing the ultrasonic diagnosis with the clinical diagnosis in 120 studies on 50 patients. The clinical diagnosis was based on clinical, biochemical and radionuclide studies, and in some cases, biopsy. At the time of the original ultrasound report clinical information was available (biopsy reports were not). All ultrasound studies were subsequently reported in random order without any clinical information and without comparison with previous or subsequent scans.This study suggests that ultrasound with or without clinical information cannot be used as a reliable basis for the diagnosis of parenchymal disease of transplanted kidneys.
