摘要:
SUMMARYA teaching technique to bridge the gap between normal radiological anatomy and clinical radiology is described. It is designed to develop in students a logical approach to the study of radiographs for the detection of departures from normal. It is not intended to teach pathological diagnoses.Checklists for each major system are given to students to guide them in formalised search patterns, e.g. in studying an arteriographic examination, the student is instructed to arrange the films in time sequence, then check sequentially the normal anatomy, the state of the vessels, and finally disturbances of vascularity. These written routines are reinforced by explanatory talks.Students are shown a number of radiographs, and have to match them with answers from a list provided. As more answers are provided than films, students must make choices, e.g. is the difference in appearance of two kidneys of IVP due to mechanical obstruction or renal artery stenosis? A simple method of recording and checking the students' choices upon a grid is described. The emphasis is on abnormal x‐ray appearances though an occasional normal is included. The films are then analysed and the choice and rejection of answers discussed.Six programmes have been developed covering skeletal, uninary tract etc. Each programme is given as a tutorial to groups of 6–8 students, and lasts about 1 hour. Anonymous evaluation has shown a high degree of student satisfaction with this techni

摘要:
SUMMARYBased on 20 years experience in both the planning of training programmes and in active teaching of student radiographers, the author suggests the following principles for radiographer training.Students must be of good educational standing e.g. matriculation level. Theoretical study must be centralised upon a tertiary educational centre with adequate staff and facilities. It is suggested that a population base of at least 500,000 is needed for such a centre. Practical training must be learnt at the “bed‐side” in approved centres with adequate work‐loads and supervisory staff. The standards of training must be maintained by assessments and examinations of theoretical study, together with records of work.A National body must exist to ensure uniform standards between training centres.Consideration of local conditions in the island state of Tasmania led to the development of a “block release” course with 1st year students having theoretical training in the 1st academic term etc. This enables students to become aware of the relevance of theoretical study and for reinforcement between the theoretical and practical aspects of the programme. It provides an even teaching load for staff. It prevents the academic and social isolation of trainees in remote centres. Lastly, only one third of students from each approved centre is engaged in theoretical study at any one time.Correspondence courses for theoretical study are an anachronism which should not be tolerated. High standards of Radiological practice can only be attained on the basis of adequately educated and motivated Ra

摘要:
SUMMARYIdiopathic arteritis of children is a widespread condition but it is most commonly reported in the'non‐white races. It affects the large conducting arteries and, in childhood, the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta are mostly involved. The term Juvenile Main Vessel Arteritis is suggested rather than Takayasu's Arteritis as the cases described bear little relationship to the condition Takayasu originally reported. In non‐caucasian children it may be an important cause of hypertension, ranking only second to renal parenchymal dise

摘要:
SUMMARYThe radiological findings are described in 12 cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosed over a three‐year period at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Western Australia. At presentation all showed a unilateral pleural effusion ranging from small to massive in size, with a right: left ratio of 2:1; in 8 cases a massive effusion developed at some time in the course of the disease. Pulmonary embolism was initially suspected in two cases and both underwent lower limb venography, emphasizing the similarities in presentation, with chest pain, dyspnoea and a serosanguineous pleural effusion. The sex and age distribution corresponds to that seen in series from other countries, and the radiological findings also closely conform to those reported elsewhere. Pleural nodules were evident in 9 cases, although only in one at presentation, and hilar enlargement was seen in only 4 cases. Soft tissue invasion by neoplasm was uncommonly seen on the x‐rays, and rib erosion was not observed in any patient. Other radiological evidence of previous asbestos exposure or other pneumoconiosis was also uncommon and was noted in three cases. An unusual presentation of a malignant pleural mesothelioma in a 27‐year‐old woman with environmental childhood exposure to asbestos is described in detail, and illustrates the importance of considering mesothelioma in the differential diagnosis of any pleural e

摘要:
SUMMARYA case report of the simultaneous occurrence of polycystic renal disease and medullary sponge kidney in a young adult male is presented.During excretory urography the presence of large tabulated kidneys and radiological evidence of medullary sponge disease should alert the clinician to the co‐existence of polycystic renal disease. Ultrasonography, radionuclide renal scan and if necessary, renal arteriography may be useful investigation

摘要:
SUMMARYA 40 year old woman with unusual bone changes due probably to an unclassified hereditary connective tissue disorder or arrested Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is described.Since the establishment of the Consultation Service for Bone Disease in the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, the junior author (K.K.) has received two main types of consultation. One, in which he confirms the known diagnosis, the other in which he confirms unknown diagnoses. The following case belongs to the second group.
