ABSTRACTMultiple radiographic projections were employed to study osseous abnormalities of the skull in twenty cases of craniofacial neurofibromatosis. Calvarial defects in the lambdoid suture were observed in eight cases. Large midline defects produced a cranium bifidum appearance in one case. Mandibular changes consisted of hypoplasia with flattening of the external contour, thinning of the body and the ramus and widening of the medial and lateral coronoid spaces. Mandibular overgrowth with a convex outer contour and increase in the vertical height was seen in one case and a large cystic lesion around three unerrupted molar teeth was seen in another case. Abnormalities were also observed in the zygomatic arch and the mastoid process. The tympanic bone was absent in three cases. A 20 degree occipitomental projection best demonstrated these abnormalities. Orbital changes consisted of enlargement, outwardly curved innominate line, indistinct lower part of the innominate line, elevated lesser wing of the sphenoid, irregular enlargement or obliteration of the superior orbital fissure and intraorbital calcification. The pituitary fossa was enlarged in two cases without evidence of raised intracranial tension. Macrocranium was observed in one case. Functional disabilities observed in some cases were conductive deafness, loss of vision, cranial nerve palsies and mental retardation. Carotid angiograms done in three cases showed tortuous branches of the external carotid artery feeding the plexiform scalp lesions. A fourth ventricle tumour was seen on ventriculography in one case which presented with hemiplegia and cerebellar signs and symptoms. Skeletal abnormalities corresponded closely to the locations of soft tissue masses indicating developmental interdependance of neuroectodermal and mesodermal derivatives.

ABSTRACTSix cardiac tumours have been detected over the preceding five year period and are reviewed. There were four left ventricular rhabdomyomas, one right ventricular myxoma and one intra‐pericardial teratoma with a malignant yolk sac component.One patient known to have tuberous sclerosis died at home and at autopsy was discovered to have multiple left and right ventricular rhabdomyomas. The second infant had the diagnosis of a broad‐based left ventricular rhabdomyoma made on the basis of the left ventricular angiogram, has mild to moderate left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and has been treated conservatively for three and a half years. Two remaining infants with left ventricular rhabdomyomas had severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and underwent emergency excision. The infant with the right ventricular myxoma had severe right ventricular outflow tract obstruction. The infant with the intra‐pericardial teratoma was moribund with cardiac compression. These two also underwent emergency excision. SUMMARYSeven cases of renal oncocytoma are reported. Angiography may be suggestive. Percutaneous biopsy is not recommended. In certain situations, partial nephrectomy may be possible. Pathological assessment of the whole tumour is essential for confident diagnosis.ABSTRACTOncocytomas are benign renal tumours, difficult to differentiate from Grawitz tumours. Seven cases are presented and the clinical and radiological features are reviewed. The angiographic features are occasionally helpful but are nonspecific. Percutaneous biopsy may be misleading. In certain situations partial nephrectomy is possible.

ABSTRACTTwo patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis whose initial presentation was with leg swelling are described. The findings on phlebography and computed tomography are described and the value of these two investigations discussed.

ABSTRACTNinety‐two deaths resulting from the use of contrast media are described and analyzed together with 228 deaths reported earlier. Of these new deaths, 11 were associated with angiography, 28 with intravenous cholangiography and 53 with urography or C.T. The majority of deaths were associated with cardiac arrest or pulmonary oedema. The mode of death appears to be unrelated to the formulation of the contrast media. ABSTRACTAlthough C.T. is useful in staging bladder tumours it is only as accurate as the resolution of the scanner. Non‐enlarged, involved lymph nodes cannot be identified, and interpretation can be inaccurate in the presence of poorly defined tissue planes, for example, post surgery, radiotherapy or if the structures are contiguous.
