摘要:
SummaryThe findings of staging laparotomies in 82 patients with Hodgkin's Disease are presented. Sub‐diaphragmatic disease was discovered in 30 patients, the spleen being the most common site of involvement (26 patients). Staging was advanced in 23 patients and reduced in 3, with consequent changes in the treatment plan of these patients. In a further 4 patients, treatment was altered by the distribution of the subdiaphragmatic disease discovered, without any change in stage.Lymphangiography was found to be an unreliable staging procedure. This was largely due to the frequent presence of disease in areas outside the lymphangiographic field spleen, mesenteric and coeliac nodes) rather than to inaccuracy of the procedure itself.Correlation of laparotomy findings with presenting sites of disease failed to identify any patient group which, on clinical grounds, had a low probability of abdominal involvement and might thus be spared a laparotomy. No patient died as a result of the operation. Post‐operative morbidity (3 major, 8 minor complications) was considered acceptable in view of the value of the information obtained to patient managem

摘要:
SummaryThe radiological diagnosis and localisation of nine cases of brain abscess complicating congenital heart disease is presented. The pathogenesis of brain abscess in congenital heart disease is briefly discussed. The need to have a high index of suspicion of brain abscess in all cases of congenital heart disease with focal neurological signs or clinical evidence of raised intracranial pressure is emphasised. The importance of early radiological diagnosis and localisation of brain abscesses followed by early treatment is stressed. The ideal surgical management of all cases of congenital heart disease which may or may not have had complicating brain abscess, is total correction of the underlying cardiac defect, thereby preventing this serious cerebral complication as well as improving the circulatory efficiency.

摘要:
Summary18 of 22 patients with malignant trophoblastic disease had radiological evidence of intrathoracic metastases. Of these 18 patients, 10 presented with pulmonary symptoms, 1 with cerebral symptoms, 1 with pulmonary and cerebral symptoms. 3 patients were asymptomatic and were discovered to have pulmonary metastases on the chest radiograph in the course of follow‐up for recent molar pregnancy. Only three patients presented with gynaecological symptoms. The findings on the chest radiograph included discrete intrapulmonary nodules in 15 patients, pleural elfusions in 2 patients, a hilar mass in 1 patient, confiuent opacities in 1 patient and miliary mottling in 1 patient.Other radiological features reported in the literature are those of pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary infarction, paramediastinal mass and pulmonary calcification. In view of the success of chemotherapy in some of these advanced cases, the possibility of trophoblastic malignancy should be borne in mind whenever these radiological appearances are encountered in young female patients, especially those presenting with haemoptysis or cerebral symptoms, even in the absence of overt pelvic diseas

摘要:
AbstractA case of spontaneous pneumothorax complicating irradiation for bronchogenic carcinoma is presented. Pneumothorax developed in a collapsed lung caused by a central bronchogenic carcinoma. The cause is presumably secondary to either a bronchopleural fistula by tumour or sudden expansion of the lung following irradiation.Various tumours of the lung have been associated with spontaneous pneumothorax, including metastatic osteogenic sarcoma12, eosinophilic granuloma4, teratoma11, other metastatic sarcomas3, lymphoma following radiation therapy8, and primary bronchogenic carcinomas1,2,3,5,6,7,9,10.We have encountered a case of spontaneous pneumothorax complicating irradiation for bronchogenic carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the English radiologic literature, and the second, in the English literature, of a case of spontaneous pneumothorax following radiation therapy for proven bronchogenic carcinoma.

摘要:
SummaryFour cases of Ewing's tumour of the rib are presented, 3 males and 1 female, all in the second decade. They all presented the typical clinical features of localised chest pain of several months' duration associated with tenderness and swelling. Radiological changes of lytic bony destruction, periosteal new bone formation best demonstrated by penetrated rib views, and a large soft tissue component would enable the diagnosis to be considered on these features alone, and appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures to be instituted.

摘要:
SummarySix cases of METATROPIC DWARFISM or its VARIANTS–four which are the first Australian cases and one which is the first Indonesian case–are reported. Four of the cases had characteristic clinical and radiographic appearances whereas two, who died in early infancy, showed some variability in radiographic features. In one of the variants microscopy showed histologic features consistent with metatropic dwarfism.Microscopic, ultrastructural and biochemical studies of cartilage should be performed in all the cases of bone dysplasias in which the radiographic diagnosis is unknown or uncert

摘要:
SummarySelective use of catheter embolic therapy both prior to tumour resection and in control of bleeding from recurrent and irresectable tumour is discussed.Experience with pre‐operative infarction of renal carcinomas and selective occlusion of the internal maxillary artery in troublesome epistaxis following radiotherapy and excision of an angiofibroma of the nasopharynx is presented. Excision of bulky vascular renal tumours was achieved with minimal blood loss and with shortening of operating time. Catheter occlusion of the internal maxillary artery obviated a further attempt at operative ligation of this vessel. Two cases (multifocal hepatoma and carcinoma in a solitary kidney) were considered for C.E.T. but in each case relative benefits appeared to be outweighed by potential risks. Further clinical experience with C.E.T. for inoperable hepatoma and multiple hypervas‐cular liver metastases is required. These results, together with other reports, suggest a useful role for C.E.T. in selected ca

摘要:
SummaryRadionuclide scanning of the liver is both sensitive and non‐traumatic and has become a widely accepted method of investigation of the hepatobiliary system. It is essential to understand the anatomical, physiological and pathological basis of liver scanning using various techniques and radiopharmaceuticals. This paper reviews the methodology and results in light of both literature and personal experienc
