SUMMARYThe Monument to the X‐ray and Radium Martyrs of All Nations was erected by the German X‐ray Society in the garden of the St. Georg Hospital, Hamburg. Among the names engraved on the monument were those of two Australians, H. Harris and J. Young. The receipt of information about many other martyrs prompted the Deutsch Röntgengesellschaft to extend the Monument. Included in the new names added to the monument are those of Frederick W. D. SUMMARY1One hundred and ten cases of locally advanced malignant tumours in various sites have received treatment combining oxygen barotherapy with 4 MeV. X‐ray megavoltage therapy to deliver three large fractions of X‐ray dosage in a total time of 21 days. Each patient received general anaesthesia, bilateral myringotomy and “pressurization” of oxygen to 45 lb. per square inch gauge pressure in a specially designed pressure vessel. Cases treated during the first 10 months are reported in relation to their status no less than two months after treatment.2Immediate tumour resolution has been good but severe radiation reactions have required reduction of the dosage first used.3Some of the preliminary results of treatment are discussed according to tumour site.4It is proposed to continue this clinical investigation in the next few years, attempting to arrive at optimal dosage fractionation to obtain more satisfactory permanent eradication of locally advanced malignant tumours than is achieved by conventional radiotherapeutic techniques, avoiding a high incidence of necrosis if possible, and being prepared to abandon the investigation should it become apparent that there are no better clinical results achieved than with standard techniques of radio

SUMMARYOxygen barotherapy introduces a number of special problems in treatment planning and requires special techniques for positioning the patient accurately in the X‐ray beam. Only X‐ray fields in a transverse plane through the vessel may be used and the angles of such fields have to be chosen so as to avoid the metal members of the pressure vessel. In practice these restrictions do not complicate the planning unduly. Shielding of unwanted parts of the X‐ray beam is accomplished using a special perspex plate fitted into the head of the accelerator and shielding blocks of a high density tungsten‐copper alloy.
