SUMMARYThe unique position of Radiology as a Diagnostic method, a method of teaching medicine, and an exercise in problem solving, justifies a greater contribution by radiologists to undergraduate medical education. The scope of the ideal contribution is outlined. Suggestions are made as to how it can be carried out. The active support of all radiologists is urged.

SUMMARYThe interpretation of the neonatal skull often presents considerable difficulties to the general radiologist. Two requirements are essential; firstly, satisfactory films and secondly, a knowledge of the variability of normal. Until this is appreciated the differentiation of normal fissures from fractures, and a critical appraisal of sutures is not possible. The common variabilities seen in the newborn skull are demonstrated.

SUMMARYA case of von Recklinghausen's disease displaying the uncommon clinical feature of extensive central and peripheral involvement is described. Vertebral angiography was chosen as the initial investigation to define the extent of the suspected bilateral acoustic tumours because of the presence of papilledema. The angiographic study outlined bilateral extracanalicular tumours. The relative merits of catheter angiography and posterior fossa myelography (using negative or positive contrast media) in this situation are discussed.

SUMMARYTonsilloliths are a common cause of calcification in the pharynx, but there is a general lack of awareness of this entity among radiologists. Now that surgery for recurrent tonsillitis is less common, it is likely that the condition will be recognised more frequently, though the administration of antibiotics may alter the natural history of the disease. They can be distinguished from other more important causes of calcification in this area by demonstrating their typical location in standard radiographic projections.

SUMMARYThe linear distance between the bifurcation of the main right and left pulmonary arteries was measured on a plain postero‐anterior chest radiograph in 20 healthy subjects and in 50 patients with mitral stenosis. For normal subjects, the range of trans‐pulmonary artery distance was 6.7 to 9.5 cm, with a mean of 8.2 cm, and S.D. of ±0.94. The mean value of this trans‐pulmonary artery distance for the group of 50 patients with mitral stenosis was 10.1 cm, the range being 8.2 to 13.0 cm, with a S.D. of ±1.2. TPAD in patients with mitral stenosis was significantly greater than the TPAD for normal subjects.Thirty‐four out of the 38 patients, i.e. 89.5% with a trans‐pulmonary artery distance of more than 9.5 cm, had mean pulmonary artery pressures of more than 30 mm Hg. Out of 12 patients with a trans‐pulmonary artery distance of less than 9.5 cm, only seven patients had a mean pulmonary artery pressure of more than 30 mm Hg.No linear correlation could be demonstrated between the trans‐pulmonary artery distance and the mean pulmonary artery pressure in patients with

SUMMARYFifty‐seven hypertensives underwent renal arteriography selected on the basis of an abnormal Lasix washout response during urography, all other criteria being normal. Forty‐five patients had normal arteriograms, 7 patients over 40 years showed minor arterial tapering, 4 had minimal fibromuscular hyperplasia, and 1 a small asymptomatic hypernephroma. It is concluded that as a screening test for renovascular hypertension the Lasix washout response by itself is of no real value because of the frequency of false positives.
