Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 289–291. ‐ In experiments on isolated mesenteric artery dihydroergotamine (DHE) at a concentration of 1.10‐6. Raised the adenosinetri phosphate (ATP), creatine phosphate (CrP), glucose‐6–phosphate and fructose‐6–phosphate levels in the muscle preparations. On addition of adrenaline at a concentration of 1.10‐6. Following DHE, the muscle relaxed coincidently with a further rise of the ATP, CrP, glucose‐6–phosphate and fructose‐6–phosphate contents. Nethalide inhibited the relaxant effect of adrenaline. In experiments on preparations not treated with DHE, adrenaline contracted the muscle and reduced its ATP and CrP contents. Adrenaline thus appears to have stimulated receptors of two types: a‐receptors linked with arterial muscle contraction and hydrolysis of ATP, and β‐receptors associated with relaxation, synthesis of ATP, and

AbstractFolkow. B. and E. H. Rubinstein.Behavioural and autonomic patterns evoked by stimulation of the lateral hypothalamic area in the cat. Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 292–299. ‐ Topical electrical stimulation of the so‐called ‘feeding centre’ and adjacent parts of the lateral hypothalamus of the cat was performed in awake animals. In some of the animals a clearly stimulus‐bound food consumption took place, and stimulation of the same structure produced in the anesthetized animals a fairly specific autonomic adjustment, involving activation of vagal fibres to the gastrointestinal tract and a sympathetically mediated cardiovascular adjustment, favoring gastrointestinal blood flow. The more frequently occurring behavioral response to stimulation of the lateral hypothalamic area involved a searching or“appetitive” exploratory response without any actual food intake during the stimulation. When stimulation in the same electrode positions was performed in the anesthetized animals no consistent or clear‐cut autonomic adjustments could be observed. The possible interrelationship between the“feeding response” and the“exploratory response” is briefly discussed. These somatomotor and visceromotor response patterns differed markedly from those obtained by stimulation of more ventrally placed but closely adjacent parts of the lateral hypothalamus. The effects induced from these electrode positions, the“alarm response”, involved a well defined attack or flight reaction, coupled with a sympathetically mediated gastro‐intestinal inhibition and a characteristic cardiovascular adjustment. favouring muscle blood flow at the expense

AbstractMartinson, J.The effect of graded vagal stimulation on gastric motiliy, secretion and blood flow in the cat. Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 300–309. — In experiments on cats gastric motility, secretion and blood flow were studied simultaneously or separately. By applying efferent vagal stimulation with variation of impulse duration but with constant voltage and impulse frequency, responses of the above mentioned functions were obtained suggesting two groups of efferent nerve fibres in the vagus nerves. Thus, secretion of both hydrochloric acid and of pepsinogen, vasodilatation and inhibition of motility (relasation of the corpus and fundus) were all elicitedviaa nerve fibre group with a considerably higher stimulation threshold than the fibre group that enhances gastric motility. Both fibre groups can exert their control at impulse frequencies below 10 imp/sec. Acta physiol. scand. 1965. 65. 310–318.—The effect on the EMG of various types of muscular work was studied in 20 healthy volunteers. The work consisted of 1) cycling of rnasirnal intensity on a bicycle ergometer. 2) exhausting sustained contractions of the elbow flexors. 3) internlittent rhythmic contractions of the same muscles as in 2 of a duration. the sum of which was equal to the duration of the sustained contractions. Particularly after the sustained muscular contractions, and to a less degree after rhythmic contractions or cycling, there appeared in the active muscles after exercise an increased number of polyphasic action potentials. The change was reversible. The duration of all action potentials decreased after exercise. There was no significant change in amplitude. Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 319–323. — Acid‐base data were obtained in cats during anesthesia with various drugs. During anesthesia with nembutal, chloralose or urethane there was no metabolic acidosis. Administration of“chloralose‐urethane” was accompanied by metabolic acidosis in 6 out of 10 cats. AbstractEuler. U. S. v. and F. Lishajko.Catecholamine depletion and uptake in adrenergic neme vesicles and in rabbit organs after decaborane. Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 324–330. — Decaborane (B10H14) increases the release rate of noradrenaline (NA) from isolated nerve vesicles in concentrations of 10‐5M and stronger. The NA retention in nerve vesicles incubated in the presence of NA and of ATP is decreased by decaborane 10‐4M which also inhibits the ATP‐dependent NA uptake in partially depleted vesicles.In a dose of 4 mg/kg i.p. decaborane gradually decreases the catecholamine stores in various organs of the rabbit. Between 23–48 hours after the decaborane injection the NA content in the heart is about 10–20 per cent of the normal value. Injection of NA. 0.3–0.4 mg/kg i. m., increases the NA content in the heart to near normal in 1–2 hrs, whereafter it falls to the previous low value in some 20 hrs.The NA taken up by the rabbit heart after depletion with decaborane is distributed between the high speed sediment and the supernatant in the same proportions as found in the normal heart suggesting a dynamic equilibrium between the vesicles and the n

AbstractEkman, L.Thyroidectomy of the goat. Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 331–336. —A procedure to obtain complete thyroidectomy in the adult goat is described. In 4 of 6 goats ectopic thyroid tissue was detected after surgical thyroidectomy. The goats were given treatment doses of 20 to 25 mCi I131once a month until no ectopic thyroid tissue could be detected by external radioactivity measurements. An additional dose of 25 mCi I131was given after the first negative radioisotope scanning. The development of hypothyroidism was followed by estimations of plasma protein‐bound radioiodine (PBP and PBI131) and total serum protein‐bound iodine (PBI). Three doses of 25 mCi I131' administered once a month to two pregnant goats caused a complete ablation of the thyroid glands in the offspring. With the exception of a complete lack of thyroid tissue the kids were apparently normally developed, but were borne dead. After delivery a very marked reduction in milk production was noted. The amounts of colostrum milk, however, seemed to be normal. The adult goats increased in weight following the combined thyroidectomy procedures, and showed certain changes in temperature regulation. AbstractJohnson, D. G.Adrenomedullary response to 2–deoxyglucose in the hypothyroid, euthyroid, and hyperthyroid rat. Acta physiol. scand. 1965.65. 337–343. — Hypothyroid animals show an increased hyperglycemic response to 2–deoxyglucose (2–DG) administration, while hyperthyroid animals show a decreased response when compared to euthyroid controls. This quantitative difference in response is reflected in a much greater depletion of the adrenaline content of the adrenals of the hypothyroid animals, while the hyperthyroid animals appear less depleted than euthyroid cofitrols. Estimation of urinary catecholamine excretion following 2–DG administration indicates that the hypothyroid rats excrete much larger amounts of adrenaline than the other groups. The hearts of all animals treated with 2–DG contain increased absolute and relative amounts of adrenaline, with the largest absolute increase being seen in the hyperthyroid animals. These results suggest that the adrenomedullary response to cellular glucopenia is modified by the thyroid status. Intravenous infusion of adrenaline appreciably raised the blood flow. oxygen consumption, CO2‐‐production, CO2‐‐tension and lactic acid elimination in the human forearm. The interrelationship of these effects is discussed. The rise in CO2‐‐production is assumed to have been due to increased oxygen consumption as well as to an increase in the lactic acid content of the tissues. AbstractRäsänen,T. Tissue eosiriopenin in the jejunal rilli of the isolaied loop during resorption of histamine. acelylcholine and ndrenaline. Acta physiol. scand. 1963.65. 352–356. — Isotonic sodium chloride, isotonic potassium chloride. acetylcholine. histamine. adrenaline and dexamethasone were injected into the loop of the rat jejunum isolated with 2 ligatures. The circulation of the loop was intact. After an hour, specimens were taken from the isolated and intact jejunum for the count of tissue eosinophilic leucocytes and of the mucosal mast cells. Sodium and potassium chloride and dexamethasone did not cause any changes in the superficial tissue eosinophils of the lamina propria at the tip of the villi or in the basal tissue eosinophils of the lamina propria Superficial tissue eosinophilia decreased during the action of acctylcholine (P<0.05) and histamine (P ‐<0.02). less markedly during the adrenaline effect. Basal tissue eosinophils inrreased in the free intestinal loop during the influence of rhe last‐mentioned arnine (P<0.01). No changes occurred in the mucosal mast cell counts.
