摘要:
Summary1The postnatal development of the length and the total cross‐sectional area with component parts have been investigated in the 7th cervical, 10th thoracic and 5th, 6th and 7th lumbar segments of the spinal cord in cats, from birth to adulthood.2The shrinkage has been shown to decrease from birth to the age of 2–3 months, at which time the values of the adult animal have been reached. The effect of shrinkage on the results is discussed.3The overall growth of segment length and of total cross‐sectional area with component parts is described by the equation,y = a + blog (x + c), which does not account for a change in the growth rate other than a decrease with increasing time.4The relative increase in volume of gray matter from birth to adulthood varies in different segments. The 7th cervical segment is thus concluded to be the most mature segment at birth, more mature than the lumbar segments and the 10th thoracic segment, the most immature. The differences between the lumbar segments, however, are too small to allow any conclusions about a difference in their stage of maturity at birth.5Most of the relative increase in volume of the gray matter occurs during the first two months, but after the first two weeks.6The proportion of area of white matter of the total cross‐sectional area increases in all segments from birth to maturity. This increase is largest during the first two months post
