摘要:
A study has been made of transmission at optical wavelengths through a hollow steel pipe the inner surface of which has a mirror finish. A suitable pipe has a bore of 1 in diameter to a tolerance of ±3 mil with a silver surface. It could carry a large number of communication channels, a typical pulse baseband width (for 10-mile spacing of regenerative repeaters) for each channel being 200 Mc/s, with an attenuation, allowing for bends of ½ mile radius, of 2½dB/mile. The mechanical requirements involve problems of construction which seem to be straightforward.

摘要:
The paper describes an experimental technique for measuring microwave magnetic diffraction fields. It establishes the capabilities of the modulated scattering method when a small loop containing two subminiature diodes in parallel is used as the scatterer. Extensive data for amplitude and phase distributions of both the electric and the magnetic fields over the entire region of a circular aperture irradiated by a plane wave have been obtained. Distributions of diffraction fields both in front of and behind the aperture are presented. Discussions on cross-polarization components and the effect of screen thickness are also included.

Atomic frequency standards are now in use in a number of countries. The measurement, in terms of these standards, of the frequencies of a number of radio transmissions which are closely controlled, and the interchange of the results obtained, enables the standards themselves to be compared. Some details are given of the various atomic standards and of the methods of measurement employed at the National Physical Laboratory. The results obtained between January, 1958, and December, 1960, for seven standards are tabulated. It is shown that the use of the v.l.f. transmissions GBR, Rugby (16kc/s), and NBA, Summit (18kc/s), enables day-to-day comparisons to be made with a precision of ±2 parts in 1010. There is some evidence that there are at present differences between the different standards of ±2 parts in 1010.

In the comparison of frequency standards of different types and of different frequencies to an accuracy of within 1 part in 1010, certain precautions must be taken in the design and operation of the electronic circuits involved.The present system used at the National Physical Laboratory for the calibration of the 100kc/s quartz standards by means of the caesium resonator is described, including an automatic frequency comparator which eliminates certain possibilities of error inherent in other methods of measurement.Brief reference is made to a proposed method for controlling a 5Mc/s quartz oscillator by means of the caesium resonance.
