摘要:
A major focus of activity in emergency medicine is the processing and management of data and information. Computers have become more accessible and more frequently used by health care professionals. The emerging field of medical informatics is more than the study of computers in medicine. Medical informatics examines the nature, collection, and recording of medical data as well as procedures to optimize the use of this information.

摘要:
The article reviews an evolving technology known as neural networks. This methodology uses nonlinear mathematical modeling to provide a memory function. Neural networks can provide an accurate analysis of a number of complex problems that are difficult to characterize using standard statistical techniques.

摘要:
Chest pain not only accounts for almost 1 in 10 emergency department (ED) visits but constitutes the source of more malpractice dollars than any other chief complaint. Problems in accurately diagnosing serious causes of chest pain include atypical histories, lack of pertinent physical findings, and limited sensitivity and specificity of current diagnostic tests. Areas holding promise include the expanded use of the ECG, new and improved technology for the detection of serum markers of myocardial injury, the extension of noninvasive testing to the ED setting, and the adoption of clinical prediction rules to estimate probabilities of various causes of chest pain.

摘要:
The advent of new and improved imaging modalities has revolutionized the diagnostic capabilities of the emergency physician. The emergency physician must understand the advantages and limitations of these imaging modalities, as well as the clinical indications for ordering specific radiologic studies.

摘要:
Human and animal sera have been in use for centuries to produce antibodies, providing the medical world with vaccines and other immunochemicals. It is only over the past decade, however, that advances in immunology and monoclonal antibody formation and purification techniques have paved the way for numerous new applications. This area is rapidly proliferating as antibody development is pursued for both diagnostic and treatment modalities. The basic principles behind the production of monoclonal antibodies and discussion of the present and future applications of monoclonal antibody therapy in emergency medicine will be reviewed.
