摘要:
The possibility of failure or contamination of potable water supplies still sounds a mental alarm. That is evidence of the water industry's success in averting major disasters. Critical to this effort is adequate planning to ensure system reliability in the event of unexpected circumstances. Redundancy relates to the provision of standby equipment or processes that improve reliability. The April 1980 issue of JOURNAL AWWA addresses these issues as they relate to emergency planning.

Occasionally, for either planned or unplanned reasons, a water agency can have a temporary breakdown in its water supply system. If this involves a major source of supply, the agency will have to use stored water or other backup sources to meet its needs. In Southern California, interagency connections have proven to be important backup sources.

摘要:
The huge quantities of chemicals being produced and transported within the US have become an area of acute concern. The effects that spills of hazardous materials can have on human health and welfare, and the environment have prompted the development of numerous private, state, and federal response systems. Described here is a private system that can be used as a model by water utilities for establishing and evaluating emergency response contingency plans to better cope with hazardous material spills that threaten drinking water supplies.

Through statistical analysis of flows in the Los Angeles aqueduct, this study determined that the addition of cationic polymers to provide in‐line flocculation of suspended particulate matter also resulted in an average 3 to 4 percent reduction in carrying capacity of the aqueduct.

摘要:
Eight reverse osmosis treatment systems were used in Sarasota County (Fla.) for the removal of Ra‐226 and other dissolved solids from water. Although the age, type, and performance of the eight systems varied, all systems lowered the Ra‐226 concentration in the raw water to below the EPA maximum contaminant level of 5 pCi/L.
