摘要:
Results of the first study concerning the impact of acid precipitation on drinking water are reported in terms of health effects in humans as measured by US Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant levels. The study focused on sampling surface water and groundwater supplies in the New England states but also included other sites in the Northeast and the Appalachians. No adverse effects on human health were demonstrated, although the highly corrosive nature of New England waters may be at least partly attributable to acidic deposition in poorly buffered watersheds and aquifers.

摘要:
The quality of water in two small streams that provide supplies to the water systems of Jennerstown and Boalsburg, Pa., was monitored during episodes of acid runoff in February 1981 (Card Machine Run) and March 1983 (Galbraith Gap Run). Changes in pH, in the concentration of aluminum, and in the the Ryznar Stability Index were determined. The magnitude and potential importance of these changes are discussed.

Preliminary research aimed at quantifying relationships between emissions and acid deposition and on‐the‐ground effects indicates that small water supplies fed by surface waters or shallow wells and cistern supplies may be adversely affected by acid deposition. In addition, acid deposition makes water more corrosive, which may result in dangerous quantities of heavy metals in distribution systems. This will not be a problem with relatively hard water or with relatively large supplies, and corrosivity should be treatable at reasonable cost.

Three areas of concern about the effect of acid precipitation on drinking water supplies are evaluated—the increased levels of heavy metals in raw water, biological imbalances in water supplies, and increased corrosivity of delivered water. Although two thirds of the US water supplies are corrosive, the extent to which this corrosivity is related to acid precipitation is unknown. Shallow wells in the Adirondack Mountains that are directly recharged by rainfall are exceptionally corrosive. Potential management practices are suggested.

The extent of asbestos contamination in sources of drinking water in the state of California is being monitored. Preliminary results show substantial fiber concentrations in surface waters whose watersheds include serpentine rock. These concentrations exhibit seasonal variations, with the largest concentrations occurring during or just following heavy rains in the watershed. Some of the concentrations were the highest measured anywhere in the world. Asbestos was also found in groundwater taken from wells that are recharged through serpentine rock. Water treatment was found to have widely varying success in the removal of asbestos fibers. In one case reduction by a factor of 5 × 104was observed as a result of conventional coagulation‐filtration. Although sparse, the data on treatment suggest that the percentage removal of fibers depends on the initial concentration.
