摘要:
When population studies indicated that Springfield, Mass., would soon need new water facilities, the Bd. of Water Comrs. took immediate steps to improve the city's facilities. This article describes how they were able to increase their output at a lower cost and in less time than was originally expected.

摘要:
When new standards demanded new water‐treatment procedures, several Canadian plants switched to direct filtration. It was very quickly found that filters were clogging with diatoms and filter runs were therefore too short. The diatom problem was overcome in several ways, as described in this article.

摘要:
The use of declining‐rate filtration has introduced a new series of variables in filter calculation and design. A more general approach is needed in the hydraulics of filtration to allow for a more rational design of filter control systems.

摘要:
This study, involving the removal of bacterial viruses from water using diatomaceous‐earth filter aids, covers the comparative properties of uncoated and polyelectrolye‐coated products as they affect the process. The work is based on studies using bacteriophage T2 for Escherichia coli. Part 2, involving this virus and poliovirus virulent strain Mahoney Type I, will be reported in a later issue.

摘要:
The Toronto water‐treatment plant has been in operation since 1911. The excellent records it kept, some pilot studies, and computer analysis are making possible an innovative and costs‐savings plan for direct filtration at high rates. The approach could be highly significant for municipal plant design.

摘要:
In conventional treatment plants the flocculation and sedimentation operations are inefficient for low‐turbidity water. Direct, high‐rate contact flocculation–filtration processes are suitable for this type of water when used with polyelectrolytes. Plants being designed for low‐turbidity water in developing countries can include the latter method to reduce overall capital cost. Existing plants also can be converted to the new method.

摘要:
Upflow filtration is a recent development in the history of water filtration. By using polyelectrolytes and progressively finer filter media a potable water can be produced that compares favorably with waters treated by conventional methods, which require flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration.

摘要:
An appropriate technology for Southeast Asia was developed to provide potable water for rural communities using local filter materials. A series filtration system using these materials produced a sparkling clear water from highly turbid surface waters without the aid of coagulants. Effluent quality is comparable to that obtained from the best slow sand filters.
