摘要:
This article reports on the results of a study made to correlate varying degrees of water hardness with the detergent consumption of the people who use the water. Detergent savings effected by water softening are compared to the costs of reducing water hardness.

摘要:
This article provides a brief overview of the development of the Los Angeles County Water Ordinance, as adopted on August 2, 1960. To accomplish the purposes set forth by the county engineer that administrative details be at a minimum and that the industry be as self‐regulating as possible, four methods of authorization were developed and written into the ordinance draft including: water utility certification; water utility authorization; water service for new subdivisions; and, water service for individual sites. The article discusses the scope of the ordinance, the intent and purpose of ordinance, and the development of a separate “utility manual” to contain the necessary specifications to implement the performance requirements.

摘要:
This article discusses a large‐scale groundwater replenishment program by the Orange County (California) Water District. The district purchased 200,000 acre‐ft of water that was brought 275 mi from the Colorado River into the district through the aqueduct system of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD). This water replenished the large groundwater basin underlying the district, and cost the Orange County Water District $2,400,000, paid for by revenue derived from two sources. Approximately one‐third was bought with money raised by an ad valorem tax on all real property within the district. Two‐thirds was purchased with money collected from a replenishment assessment levied by the district on all water produced from the groundwater supply and paid by those who pumped the water.

摘要:
This article discusses the problem of off‐the‐job accidents as a factor in efficient operations of U.S. corporations. The article briefly outlines some of the reasons for an off‐the‐job safety effort and describes the program of two major companies. Topics covered include: statistical estimate of accidents; application of employee safety programs; causes of off‐duty accidents; safety principles; reasons for off‐duty hazards; industry concern; programs in effect; and, company objectives.

摘要:
Some communities may eliminate a water shortage by more efficient or more complete use of the existing water supply. To do this, the community must know what proportions of the existing supply are going to the various uses. This article discusses metering the water used by the various consumers to obtain this information, and the importance of maintaining the accuracy of the meters. The article discusses the growth of metering in Wisconsin, and the primary importance of metering in providing a basis for definite and fair billing.

摘要:
In this joint discussion, Gordon E. McCallum discusses the federal government's work to control water pollution. Federal pollution control in Illinois is particularly considered. The discussion centers on the accomplishments, new requirements and future courses of action of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, passed by Congress in 1956. The second part of the discussion by Richard S. Nelle focuses on state activities, particularly in Illinois including: stream pollution control; planning for control of watershed pollution; state authority over waste treatment works; and, cooperation between state agencies.

This notice corrects an error found in the article by A.P. Black and Donald G. Willems, “Electrophoretic Studies of Coagulation for Removal of Organic Color” (May 1961 JOURNAL, Vol. 53, pp. 589‐604); on p. 600, right‐hand column, line 22 from the bottom, “orthokinetic” should read “electrokinetic.”

摘要:
This article discusses a study of the behavior of radionuclides on ion exchange resins used for the decontamination of cooling water in a nuclear reactor. The principal objectives of the investigation were identification of the nuclides, measurement of their relative concentration as a function of bed depth, and interpretation of these data in the light of the effective performance of the system. Results showed that, in the cation, anion, and mixed‐bed columns, the concentration of radionuclides on the resin decreased with increasing bed depth. At the same time, the overall half‐life of the retained materials simultaneously increased. As anticipated, considerable variation with depth was observed in relative radionuclide composition, the shorter‐lived materials predominating near the surface, the longer‐lived near the bottom of each column. The data emphasize the care required in using data on gross radioactivity removals for the evaluation of the efficiency of an ion exchange system. This is true because the effluent, although exhibiting a “satisfactory” reduction in gross activity, may actually contain a significantly greater proportion, as well as actual concentration, of longer lived radionuclides.

摘要:
In view of the status accorded to the turbidimetric procedure in Standard Methods and the apparent popularity of the method, an investigation of some of the variables involved was undertaken and a significantly improved procedure was developed. The results of this investigation cannot be easily summarized and are too lengthy to be suitable for publication. A limited number of copies of a report of this investigation are available from the authors. This article provides a list of the variables that were investigated, and covers the following topics: experimental apparatus; reagents; procedure; calculations; and, precision and accuracy.
