摘要:
It is the Water Desalting Com.'s assignment to (1) inform the membership on desalting, with emphasis on applications for public water supply, and (2) review desalting‐plant operations with special emphasis on post‐treatment and the transmission of low‐solids water. The committee's progress through 1970 was reported in the June 1972 issue.1Here is a more inclusive updating.

摘要:
Since man first “came down from the trees” he has utilized geothermal resources. Hot springs have warmed his caves; the people of Rome, Greece, and Japan used hot springs for thermal and space heating. Today scientists seek ways to harness such sources for power—and to supply fresh water by desalting their brine.

摘要:
Cooperative studies of the Office of Saline Water with federal, state, and municipal agencies engaged in water‐supply planning are adding to the knowledge about potential applications of desalting. Information is being gathered on short‐range possibilities for small desalting plants as well as possible large‐scale applications to assist in solving longer‐range water‐supply needs. Projections of overall desalting requirements in US regions having fresh‐water shortages are given.

摘要:
The process of reverse osmosis has been known for many years; its application to water desalting is little more than a decade old, however. Here is a synopsis of the developments that have accrued in the field within the brief span of time.

摘要:
Early in 1971 the OSW sponsored a study with the AWWA Research Foundation to review the impact of desalting technology on community water supplies. Operating experiences at various desalting plants in the US provided valuable background for this study. A review of the experiences with the Buckeye electrodialysis plant was made as a part of this program.

摘要:
Freezing processes for the desalination of water have undergone active development for about 20 yr, and they have been shown to be technically feasible. With recent developments, the OSW is currently expressing active interest in the commercial exploitation of desalination.
