Hong Kong Colony has always had to cope with the problem of supplying its millions of people with adequate supplies of potable water. As a last resort the colony can rely on costly desalination. However, this article reports on the last major project for securing a natural water‐supply storage System by closing off both ends of the Straits of Kwun Mun, pumping out the trapped sea water, and allowing the newly exposed area to fill from natural and tunneled catchments.

Loss of reservoir‐storage capacity because of Sediment deposition is a long‐term widely recognized problem. Nationally, as many as 1 million acre‐ft of reservoir capacity may be lost to Sediment deposition each year. In spite of this potential problem, a survey of major water Utilities reveals that few Utilities have data available to describe losses in reservoir capacity. Even though land use is shown to have a significant factor bearing on Sedimentation rates, less than half the Utilities reported current knowledge of land use. This article discusses typical Sedimentation problems and factors affecting reservoir Sedimentation rates and recommends an Action Now program to help in obtaining needed data.

Anticipating a water shortage which may occur even sooner than expected, engineers explored the possibility of diverting flows from the Connecticut and Millers rivers and a portion of the Tully River into the Quabbin Reservoir, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

There have beert many changes during the past decade in the concepts of development planning and in the roles of sanitary engineers and other Professionals in the planning process. Although most professional knowledge is applied to solving environmental problems of communities, engineers are being called upon, more and more, to become involved in the comprehensive development planning of whole river basins, provinces, and even countries. In this broader planning effort engineers are also concerned with the water needs of economic sectors such as manufacturing, which is discussed here.
