For many water‐distribution systems, it's an inevitable process—corrosion occurs, repairs have to be made, and maintenance crews have to be summoned. This article explains how management can organize, analyze, and carry out an expeditious, economical maintenance operation.

In 1971, federal legislation was enacted that requires operators of underground gas transmission and distribution companies to provide corrosion control by using cathodic protection on mains. Currents from this type of protection, however, can cause problems for the water‐utility industry.

Cathodic protection of underground pipelines is not new in Europe, having been a recognized technology for many years in natural‐gas and petroleum high‐pressure lines. Now underground water pipelines are so protected, and a study of the procedure is presented. The first portion of this article contains background‐development information. The last half contains definitive design information applicable to water pipes.

Connecting different metals together electrically for grounding purposes often results in corrosion problems on buried piping systems. The corrosion is caused by direct current flowing between dissimilar metals. When establishing grounded systems to protect persons and equipment, it is necessary to consider the means of minimizing corrosion of metals buried in the earth.

When a change in the source of raw surface water to the Middlesex Water Co. generated discolored‐water complaints, a laboratory coupon‐testing program was established to evaluate selected inhibitors. The coupon testing was expanded to measure actual corrosion rates in the distribution system and determine the inhibitor efficiency. These tests have revealed product efficiencies greater than laboratory projections and have resulted in chemical cost savings.
