摘要:
AWWA was founded on Mar. 29, 1881, by a small group of men under the leadership of Jacob Thomas Foster, who also served as president of the infant organization during its first 2 yr of existence. The life and times of this inspiring leader are detailed in an informative biography.

摘要:
The Office of Saline Water has been entrusted by Congress to provide for development of economical means of converting sea and brackish waters to a quality suitable for municipal, industrial, and agricultural use as well as to determine water demineralization costs by the leading desalting processes compared with other means of providing water.

摘要:
It has been nearly a decade since the American Concrete Inst. organized Com. 344 to devise a standard for circular prestressed‐concrete structures. A few years ago, the committee made its final report, and for better or worse it has often served as a guideline for building concrete water tanks. The lead article of the four that follow briefly puts the controversy generated over applicability of the report to water tanks into perspective. The second article succinctly describes the aims of the committee and the trials and tribulations that it suffered before a report could be generated that would muster the approval of most of the committee members. The last two articles relate the criticisms of two men involved with prestressed‐concrete water‐tank construction, with regard to the value of the report of AWWA members.

摘要:
There are more than a half dozen suggested approaches to solve the sludge problem. Some of them have been amply covered before. Five others—mainly concerned with processing and reprocessing of the sludge product—are treated in this committee report, which concludes with the acknowledgment that considerable standardization is necessary before the problem can be successfully solved.

摘要:
Here are results of a survey of randomly selected lime‐soda ash and zeolite plants, which show that zeolite plants are normally installed when capacities of less than 5 mgd are required. However, chemical costs and the composition of the water may make zeolite plants with capacities of 10 mgd desirable and economical. Charts and examples are given for calculating exact chemical costs to be added to plant costs to determine the system indicated.

摘要:
A Metricized ArticleJar testing and pilot‐plant work can prove valuable precursors in designing floc basins—as the authors of this article pointedly cite. They also are quite incisive in their refutation of some prevailing theories regarding mixing and settling times. By their preliminary research, the Phoenix water department has been able to trim design costs considerably.
