This presentation discusses the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act by South Carolina and Georgia. South Carolina required that all public water supplies would be responsible for the bacteriological monitoring requirements of the act, but the self‐monitoring program showed inconsistencies. The basic task of implementing Georgia's safe drinking water program centered around adjusting and expanding the ongoing program to meet the new statutory requirements. Data management seemed to be the most pressing problem.

Direct filtration is being studied extensively as a cost effective means of meeting the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations for turbidity. The March 1980 issue of JOURNAL AWWA describes the conditions for which direct filtration has and has not been found to be both effective and economical.

Eight California surveys were conducted to estimate the percentage of consumers who knowingly received notification in each community and who understood the problem requiring notification, to obtain from consumers an evaluation of the general worth of such notifications, and to develop recommendations regarding the method and content of future consumer notifications.

Rapid growth in Gladstone, Mo., resulted In Increased requests for the services provided by the water and wastewater department. These requests in turn created demands for additional overtime hours—a demand the city had a difficult time meeting until the institution of a four‐day work week. The new schedule resulted in increased productivity, decreased overtime and sick leave, and better service.

A filtration research program conducted at Duluth, Minn., included pilot and full‐scale plant studies to investigate the effectiveness of anionic polymers, the use of pH adjustment to reduce alum feed rate, the effects of various rapid mix velocity gradients on particulate removal, alternate fluoride chemical feed points, and the operational impact of exceptionally high turbidities experienced as a result of storms on Lake Superior.
