Most of the ground water in the western part of the Netherlands is undrinkable due to saltwater infiltration of the land, which is well below sea level. Since the city of Rotterdam must, therefore, depend on surface water, largely that of the Rhine, the maintenance of quality in holding reservoirs is important, especially in light of increased industrial pollution of the Rhine.

The Fairfax County Water Authority, upon acquisition of a new facility, the Alexandria Water Company, found itself faced with the problem of increasing output without new construction. Therefore the Authority proceeded to investigate the possibility of increasing the output of its filters through the concept of high rate filtration.

In June 1964 a committee composed of distinguished managers and engineers of investor‐owned and publicly‐owned utilities was asked to work with the Distribution Division in the preparation of a standard form of reporting “Distribution System Performance.” The form is printed here, and is intended to be helpful to every utility whose sales are metered, in evaluating its own performance, and can also be helpful to the industry in general if the data are published for comparative purposes.

Lubricating oil from deep well turbine pumps not infrequently accumulates on the surface of the water in wells. If too much oil collects, it can be pumped into the water system with unpleasant consequences. It is desirable to know how much oil has accumulated, and if there is a significant amount present, it should be removed. This paper, submitted to the AWWA Journal on March 13, 1970, describes a method for achieving this goal. The method involves the use of a device called a thermistor, a sensing element whose electrical resistance decreases with increasing temperature.

Cross‐connection control is generally accepted as the responsibility of the water purveyor. This puts a considerable burden on the water utility, as no installation remains static, and industrial users tend to alter in‐plant piping. The extent of the problem, and some steps toward solutions, are discussed here.

Most of the difficulty in providing adequate water during peak demands lies in the distribution system involved, not in the lack of a source. Constant changes in the demands on a system cause breakdowns and failures. With the proper outlook, these can be avoided.

The author comments on various administrative aspects of cleaning and cement‐mortar lining water mains to alleviate the problems that occur in an unlined system. Some of these problems could be dealt with and removed, but unless preventative measures are taken, they will only occur again.

The possibility of exporting water from the lower Mississippi River to Texas and New Mexico is increasing with the decrease in ground water resources available to these states. Harry P.
