This article summarizes a study to demonstrate by argument and example that the correct application of economic principles will produce the greatest efficiency in water supply procurement and use in relation to, and in competition with, all the other desires of the community, as based on the values established by the community. Although many of the arguments presented are at variance with the present practice governing the use of existing water supplies and the development of new supplies, they indicate that certain “reforms” now in process (for example, changes taking place in water law) and supposedly directed to an improvement in the decision‐making practice, will actually make things worse. In other words, this study indicates that a major change, rather than merely a marginal modification, in the trend of current practice and thought on water supply problems is in order.

摘要:
This article discusses the quantity of water used by the food waste disposer and the dishwasher. The article discusses a method developed for the approximate determination of water use by a disposer operated at a main pressure that falls within a 10‐180 psi range. Twenty‐six homes were included in a survey that covered a span of 2 years. The article states that the dishwasher has a definite reservoir capacity, a fixed valve arrangement and a repetitive washing and rinsing cycle. Therefore, approximately the same quantity of water is used each time the dishwashing machine is put through a cycle.

摘要:
This article summarizes the results of the use of the membrane filter (MF) and MPN procedures in Illinois during the fiscal year 1960‐61 by comparing the costs and production time involved in each procedure. The data was provided by the six laboratories of the department, which are located in different areas of the state. The sources of the samples tested included wells (dug, drilled, and driven), surface supplies, swimming pools, bathing beaches, and stream samples. Experimental apparatus is discussed, along with costs for media, labor and materials.

This article discusses the AWWA Committee Report on developments in saline‐water conversion, 1962. The discussion includes the principles, economics, and future applicability of some of the desalinization processes, including the processes of distillation, electrodialysis, freezing, and solar energy. Considerable emphasis was placed upon the desalinization of brackish water and on the extent of brackish municipal water supplies in the United States and Canada.

This article discusses a report of Task Group 2620 P‐Fluoridation Materials and Methods, and continues the practice of publishing the names of fluoridated water supply systems by adding the names of 97 additional systems to the list which started fluoridating this year in the United States and Canada. This brings the total number of water supply systems to 1,329 serving 43,700,000 people. These, together with the 7,300,000 people using water naturally containing 0.7 ppm or more fluoride, bring to almost 51,000,000 the number of persons using fluoridated water in the United States and Canada.

摘要:
This article discusses simultaneous precipitation of calcium and ferric phosphates in the waste as one of the processes considered for use in decontaminating low level radioactive aqueous waste in a Dorr sludge blanket clarifier at Lucas Heights, New South Wales, Australia. Pilot plant decontamination experiments were conducted to determine first the effect of lower concentrations of the precipitating ions, PO43‐(40 ppm), Ca+ + (30 ppm), and Fe3+(20 ppm) at lower pH values on radioactive water removal. Second, batch precipitation experiments were conducted to determine the concentration of dosing ions necessary for complete precipitation at a final pH of 9.5.

This article discusses a study to provide taste and odor thresholds for pure ABS. A review of the literature on taste and odor of detergents studies is provided. The experimental material for this study consisted of a sample of reference ABS obtained from the Soap and Detergent Association. The stated ABS content was 63.2 per cent. Solutions of purified ABS in distilled water were used. Solutions with ABS concentrations up to 1,000 mg/l had virtually no odor; however, much lower concentrations were detected by taste. Purified ABS at a concentration of 60 mg/l in water was detected in taste tests by 50 per cent of a panel of judges; the lowest detectable concentration, 16 mg/l, was detected by only 5 per cent of the panel. The ABS concentration in finished water rarely exceeded a few tenths of a milligram per liter purified ABS, corrected for moisture content, in taste‐ and odor‐free distilled water.

摘要:
This article discusses the results of a cultural biochemical and serologic study of 235 suspect cultures isolated from thirteen farm ponds in eight Ohio counties that was made during 1960 and 1961. The study failed to establish any of the isolates as typical Salmonella or Shigella species. These results suggest that the farm pond waters are only lightly polluted and indicate that farm ponds, properly maintained, are a source of raw water of good bacteriologic quality.
