摘要:
Through a conversation with the heroic Anglo‐Saxon patriot Hereward the Wake (Wake meaning the Awake, the Watchful, the Alert and Observant) it is suggested that it would be strategically wise for the water industry to accept the fact that the environmentalists dominate the press, legislative bodies, and public opinion and to align ourselves more or less with that popular cause and reclaim the role of protectors of public health. Mr. Mannion also asks for support of AWWA's “United for Safe Drinking Water” campaign.

In upholding a water rate determination, a Florida appellate court ruled that it was within the authority of the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to impute contributions in aid of construction to a margin reserve.

摘要:
George E. Symons, past president of the association and only living member of the AWWA Hall of Fame, talks with JOURNAL editor Nancy Zeilig about the history of JOURNAL AWWA, the evolution of the association, and his own career in the water industry. The interview took place April 14, 1989, in Palm Beach, Florida, where Symons has lived since his retirement in 1984.

摘要:
Happy birthday, JOURNAL AWWA! Launched in 1914, the JOURNAL quickly became the flagship of the North American water industry. In this special section, we chart the JOURNAL's course, spotlighting landmark contributions from industry leaders in five subject areas: waterborne disease, disinfection, water resources, filtration, and utility management. Sidebars highlight the views of contemporary experts in each of these fields and profile five companies that joined the JOURNAL as advertisers in its first year of publication. A time line chronicles significant events in the history of the industry and of the JOURNAL itself.

摘要:
Lake Eureka was created in 1942 to serve as a water supply source for Eureka, Ill., but because of persistent complaints about tastes and odors, in 1979 the city abandoned the lake and switched to groundwater. A low‐energy mechanical destratifier installed in the deepest part of the lake and chelated copper sulfate application to control blue‐green algae were first used in 1981 to improve water quality. The aerator has destratified the lake and maintained adequate oxygen levels. Iron and manganese concentrations in deep water have been reduced by 95 to 97 percent from the predestratification levels. Chlorine demand values have been reduced by more than half, and problem‐causing blue‐green algae have been brought under control. The city reinstated the lake as its water supply source in April 1982 and has realized a 50 to 60 percent savings in annual plant operating costs over the past six years.

摘要:
Three popular variations of the iodometric determination of ozone were investigated using a spectrophotometric ozone monitor as the referee method. Determinations carried out with a neutral buffered potassium iodide reagent acidified to pH 2 with sulfuric acid were observed to give values that were 15–30 percent higher than those obtained with the unbuffered potassium iodide and Masschelein modification methods relative to the referee method. Sampling parameters such as flow rate were shown to have a marked effect on the determinations. Because of the technique‐sensitive nature of the determinations, it is recommended that iodometry not be pursued as a standard method for measuring ozone.

摘要:
The susceptibility of alumina particles to ozone‐induced destabilization in the presence of humic material and calcium was evaluated. It was observed that calcium increased susceptibility to ozone‐induced colloid destabilization. The concentration of ozone required for particle destabilization is a function of the organic carbon concentration as well as the calcium concentration. Experiments without ozonation showed that suspensions with higher concentrations of calcium and lower concentrations of humic material coagulate more readily than suspensions of lower concentrations of calcium or higher concentrations of humic material.

摘要:
An integrated pilot‐ and full‐scale study was conducted to evaluate the effects of ozone on water quality in several different treatment schemes. It appeared that low dosages of ozone (0.75 mg/L) increased levels of total organic carbon, but the effect leveled off at higher ozone concentrations (1.5 mg/L). Ultraviolet absorbance, however, was observed to decrease with increasing ozone dosage. No correlation was found between ozone dosage and turbidity reduction. Although the reduction in trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) generally increased immediately after single‐stage application of ozone, overall THMFP reduction for two‐stage ozonation was shown to decrease with ozone concentration for several phases of experimentation, especially when softening followed ozonation or when chlorination was conducted at high pH levels.
