摘要:
This article discusses the San Francisco Water Department's philosophy of helping the customer in any reasonable way: be fair, be reasonable, be honest. Inquiries of themselves are not necessarily a reflection on the utility, but the successful settlement of inquiries is vital to the advancement of the utility's customer relations.

摘要:
This article discusses some of the more common causes of employee absenteeism and turnover, and possible remedies. These causes may be things associated with the organization, its plant and its policies, or they may be things associated with the worker. The first considerations involve the factors of job‐related absenteeism and turnover.

摘要:
For the water supply as well as the waste treatment industries of the community, this study of the water use characteristics of domestic consumers serves to evaluate a number of the various possible factors relating to the differences in domestic use of water. The two objectives in analyzing the factors which may cause variation in water use between dwelling units were to determine the extent of uniformity in water use (within the study sample), and determine the differences in water use, if any, by special group classifications within the study sample. Indirectly, the study was concerned with the pumping and distribution system investment of the water utility. The study examined whether findings on residential water fixtures and equipment, and on patterns of household water use, indicated the type of various demands in single‐dwelling units.

摘要:
This article discusses domestic water use in Sweden. Both domestic and total water demands in European countries are usually much less than those in the United States. Water demands in Sweden are no exception even though Sweden has one of the highest rates of water use in Europe. This is in no small measure due to the high standard of living prevalent in the country.

摘要:
This article presents statistical evidence of the successful operation of the Servico Autonomo de Aqua e Esgoto (SAAE), or Autonomous Service for Water and Sewerage, in Brazil in 1961. The data was gathered from a group of fourteen water supply systems located in the state of Para, in northern Brazil. This selection was made purposely because, as is generally known, the area is one of the poorest in the country, with a very low per capita income. The author believes that the group represents the average type of town of the region, a part of the Amazon Valley where the jungle is in the customer's back yard. It is hoped that the Brazilian experience in water management may serve at least as a source of reference for other countries.

摘要:
This article discusses federal and state cooperation in the development of water resources in California. The article discusses past projects that integrated land and water for the benefit of the population, and that reveal a pattern for future enterprises. The projects discussed include: the Klamath Project, a 1905 Bureau of Reclamation project in northern California; the 1935 Central Valley Project that readjusted the inequitable distribution of water within California's Central Valley; and, the Colorado River development projects that included the Boulder Canyon Project with the All‐American Canal System, Parker Dam, the Colorado River Aqueduct, the San Diego Aqueduct, and the Palo Verde Diversion Dam.

摘要:
This article covers several topics relevant to a proposed control system that include the three principal components of a system: information assembly; logical application; and, remote control. The Dallas (Texas) City Water Works has had several years of experience in applying digital computers in the solution of water network design problems. This experience has been built up to the extent that concepts for computer control of water system operations have naturally developed. The effectiveness of the computer‐programed logic, which enables the engineer to analyze network operations, has also increased.

摘要:
This article discusses research at the R. A. Taft Sanitary Engineering Center to investigate the cause of odor production by algae. Investigations carried out with Chlorococcum, a unicellular green alga, in pure culture indicate that the odoriferous material is, for the most part, retained within the cells until their death or disintegration. The odor produced by this algae increased notably under experimental conditions in the acidic pH range. Fractionation of disintegrated algal cells revealed that a number of chemical compounds are involved in the odoriferous material.
