When consumers began complaining about the foul drinking water in Fairfax County, Va., water‐authority personnel initiated a program to monitor the malodorous contaminants in an attempt to eliminate them. Three methods employed in the process are detailed in this article in addition to the resultant analyses.

摘要:
The calcium carbonate ion‐pair is demonstrated to be the major component of hardness in aqueous solutions at high pH valves. Hardness due to calcium carbonate ion‐pairs cannot be removed with conventional lime‐soda ash water softening operations. This article considers the importance of ion‐pairs in water softening.

This article details results of application of a clarifier, operated both in alum and lime modes, to studies of viral‐removal efficiency. Microbiologically those results suggest that the high‐lime process be applied to the disinfection of wastewater.

Research has revealed thatBacillusspecies readily degrade geosmin.Bacillus cereusATCC 9139 andBacillus subtilusstrains were found to be as effective asBacillus cereusstrain 10876. This last organism had been previously reported as the best strain for geosmin degradation in both laboratory and field studies.

Despite recent advances in water‐utility technology, operators are still receiving consumer complaints of funny‐tasting water. Presented here is a new technique to rid treated water of polysulfide taste by sulfonating and by monitoring the process with Threshold‐Odor‐Number (TON) determination.

For the past several years, the Bureau of Reclamation (BuRec) has been investigating the load deflection characteristics of steel and plastic‐base pipe buried in a special laboratory test container. The results have been enlightening and have raised some interesting questions. This article is one of the first complete reports comparing the deflections.
