摘要:
This article presents Chapter 9 of The National Plan for Emergency Preparedness, issued in August 1964, by the U.S. Office of Emergency Planning. The document outlines responsibilities for providing, treating, and safe‐guarding water for all essential purposes during a national emergency, together with procedures for the emergency operation of water resources facilities.

摘要:
This article discusses the need for standardization of materials and equipment in Latin America. The rapid industrialization of the area and the formation of trade alliances such as the Area Latino‐Americana de Libre Comercio and the Central American Common Market have emphasized the need for standardization. For such alliances and exchanges to be successful, not only raw materials but also, more importantly, manufactured products must be standardized. The article discusses the reorganization and reactivation of the Pan‐American Standards Committee (CPANT), whose goal is to stabilize Latin America through technology. The article discusses the progress of the plastic pipe industry in the U.S. as an excellent example of the need for standardization.

摘要:
This article discusses establishing a “middle step,” or a transition stage between how a utility operates without collective bargaining, and the inevitable approach of union contracts at all public water utilities. The article presents the method used by the city of San Diego to establish a labor‐management advisory board in 1960 that has since proved to be very effective. The Personnel Advisory Council as the panel is termed, has generally met the needs of the groups involved.

摘要:
This article begins by describing the U.S. Public Health Service Water Pollution Surveillance System that was established in 1957 for the collection and dissemination of basic data on water quality. The article lists the materials that fall into the trace metal category that may be measured spectrographically, along with the significance of each metal. This article discusses the sample preparation and the spectrographic method used in the analyses and summarizes the results of analyses of samples from six major water systems of the U.S. since the beginning of the program. The six major water systems include the Ohio River, Colorado River, Missouri River, Columbia River, Mississippi River, and the Great Lakes.

摘要:
Diatomite filters were first used by the U.S. military during World War II. Following the war, water utilities first began using these filters for filtering potable water. In 1957, AWWA established Task Group 2710 P‐Diatomite Filtration, to determine more efficient design criteria for municipal use of diatomite filters. The objectives of the task group were to: define the areas of application of diatomite filters; define the essential characteristics of filters, filter aids, and filter installations; promote further research; and, provide a continuing record of accomplishments. This article provides the report of the AWWA Task Group 2710 P‐Diatomite Filtration.

摘要:
This article discusses the effectiveness of water treatment processes in coping with relatively small concentrations of pesticides in raw water. Duplicate pilot water treatment plants at the Taft Center were used to evaluate the effectiveness of conventional and auxiliary treatment processes. The methods and procedures used included: the chromatographic method; solubility and incidental loss; coagulation and filtration; chlorine; potassium permanganate; ozone; powdered activated carbon; and, granular activated carbon.

摘要:
This article discusses chemical spills entering the streams of West Virginia resulting from accidents involving common carriers. The Interstate Commerce Commission's (ICC's) classification of poisons is presented, along with shipping and handling regulations. Three examples of chemical spills in accidents involving common carriers are provided.

摘要:
This article discusses a method that has been recently developed that allows the direct quantitative enumeration of the fecal‐coliform‐organism group by the membrane filter (MF) technique without the need for prior enrichment or subsequent chemical testing. A medium for fecal coliform organisms (MFC) is recommended that contains no inhibitory substances for coliform bacteria and that depends on an incubation temperature of 44.5°C for 24 hrs. for its selectivity.
