This article discusses the planning behind a proposed (and passed) 1961 bond issue to finance an increase to the water supply available to the San Francisco water department's service area, which includes most of San Mateo County, northern Santa Clara County, and much of southern Alameda County, as well as the city and county of San Francisco. The supply problem is discussed, along with the components of overall water resource planning, estimation of requirements, and specific elements of the San Francisco project.

This article discusses efforts at water pollution control in the United States. A brief overview of the history of federal legislation to control water pollution is presented, along with the Congressional policy of leaving it up to the individual states, the national scope of the water pollution control program, other special and cooperative programs in water pollution control, and future needs for controlling new pollutants.

This article discusses the use of distillation as an integral part of any future comprehensive recycling of community water supplies. The economic and technical aspects of distillation are presented in the article by using a hypothetical town and surrounding community as an example. Topics covered include: necessary preconditions; quantity of solids removed; preliminary treatment; alternative distillation procedures; disaster safeguard; distillation residue; costs; difficulties in cost estimation; operating efficiencies; distillation methodology; types of apparatus; countercurrent flash still; controlled film still; comparison of compelled film stills; wiped film tubulator and flat plate; centrifugal recompression; multistage centrifugal stills; selection of a still; and, experimental procedure.
