24 sera from primiparous women were studied. The HL—A phenotypes of both husbands and wives were determined in 21 cases out of 24. A comparative study was performed between the specificity of the antibodies detected and that of the antibodies expected from the husband's HL—A phenotype. In 4 cases, the specificity of the antisera could not be defined. In 8 cases, the antisera contained a single antibody directed against a single HL—A antigen. In 12 cases, the specificities of the antibodies were broader than expected. In 3 cases, antibodies were detected against an antigen of a given cross‐reacting group (CREG) in women already carrying an antigen belonging to the same CREG. They concerned two anti‐HL—A2 antibodies detected in woman carrying Da15 (W28) antigen and an anti‐FJH antibody in a woman carrying an HL—A7 antigen.The strength of the sera from primiparous women was compared with that of sera from multiparous women. The distribution of 19 HL—A antigens was studied in three ethnic groups in Singapore: Chinese, Malays, and Indians. Two antigens (one from each HL—A locus) were found to be significantly more frequent in each ethnic group when compared to the other two ethnic groups. These antigens were HL—A11 and W10 in Chinese, HL—A9 and W15 in Malays, and HL—A1 and W17 in Indians. The antigens HL—A10, HL—A8, and W14 had a low frequency in the three ethnic groups. The virtual absence of HL—A1 in Chinese, low frequency in Malays, and high frequency in Indians support the suggestion that this antigen is a “Caucasian” antigen.The presence of linkage disequilibrium between the two HL—A loci was investigated by the calculation of delta values. Immunoglobulin G, appearing after several months in the serum of a recipient of a successful kidney transplant from a closely matched sibling donor, was demonstrated to progressively inhibit unidirectional mixed lymphocyte cultures when donor lymphocytes were used either in responding or stimulating cell populations. The active recipient IgG had no effect in cultures in which donor cells were not used, nor did IgG obtained from other individuals show nonspecific inhibitory effects on cultures containing donor cells. It is suggested that the MLC inhibitory immunoglobulin may serve an immunoregulatory function after renal transplantation.

A method is described for separating lymphocytes by using heparinized venous blood. The platelets are eliminated by means of aggregation with ADP, and the lymphocytes are separated from the red cells and granulocytes by a variant of Thorsby's modification of the Bøyum method. Our method is very rapid; pure lymphocyte suspensions are obtained in less than an hour. This technique ensures the elimination of platelets which could give rise to inhibition phenomena in the lymphotoxicity reaction. Six sets of unrelated healthy individuals, phenotypically “identical” in each set for the four antigens of the two HL—A segregant series, were tested with 153 antiplatelet antisera by microcomplement‐fixation. In five of the six sets the results unequivocally show that the individuals were not identical by complement‐fixation reactions. It is proposed that sera which manifest nonidentity between individuals within these sets identify either “variants” of the known HL—A antigens or antigens of a third segregant series of the HL—A system or of a non‐HL—A system.
