The haplotype sharing distribution in affected sib pairs are used to demonstrate the linkage of a susceptibility gene for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to the HLA region. Family and population studies suggest heterogeneity in the etiology of RA.

The Indian population can be divided broadly into Dravidians and the Aryans. In this report, we have attempted to analyze the HLA genetic profile of 400 native North Indian Hindus of Aryan descent. The gene frequencies of a majority of class I and II antigens show similarity to the Caucasoid population. An interesting finding was a complete lack of antigen B14 while B16 and B41 occurred with the least frequency. Haplotype A10, B8 with significant positive linkage disequilibrium as well as showing the highest incidence is characteristic of North Indians.

The frequency of HLA‐A, B, DR antigens was studied in 24 patients with acute measles encephalomyelitis compared to 1926 control subjects. The results demonstrated no association between the susceptibility to the disease and HLA markers. The localisation of the principal blood group antigens has been studied in human liver. These blood group antigens included the erythrocyte antigens and the antigen of the major histocompatibility complex. This study was performed by the indirect immunofluorescence technique using polyclonal antibodies of human or animal origin and monoclonal antibodies from hybridomas. This study has shown that the normal hepatocyte is lacking in blood group antigens. On the contrary, the biliary cell was rich in antigenic markers: the main antigens expressed were Lewis, Pr, HLA‐A and B antigens.In Kupffer cells, only i and HLA‐DR antigens were clearly expressed. The endo‐thelial cells of blood vessels mainly show A, B, H, HLA‐A and B antigens; HLA‐DR and Pr are slightly expressed. HLA‐DR antigens were more strongly expressed on veins than on arteries. MHC‐class II antigens on canine lymphoid cells were detected with monoclonal antibodies (Mabs). On the basis of reactivity with resting or activated T lymphocytes two groups of Mabs were reported earlier. Non‐activated T lymphocytes expressed MHC‐class II antigens recognized by the first group whereas the second group recognized only MHC‐class II antigens on activated T lymphocytes. In this study we analysed the reactivity pattern of both groups of Mabs with purified canine B lymphocytes. One‐ and two‐colour immunoflowcytometric analysis, immu‐noprecipitation, immunohistology and MLC inhibition were performed. The Mabs which only reacted with activated T lymphocytes appeared to stain also purified slg+lymph node cells. Two‐colour fluorescence and immunohistology confirmed the reactivity of these Mabs with B lymphocytes. Immunoprecipitation showed the bimolecular structure of these antigens. It was concluded that two subsets of MHC‐class II antigens can be detected on canine lymphoid cells. One subset showed an aberrant distribution being expressed on both nonactivated and activated T and on B lymphocytes. Rh‐immunizaton of a male recipient was observed following the transplantation of two kidneys from Rh‐pos donors. Natural autoreactive H‐2‐specific antibodies were detected by lymphocytotoxic test in sera of 15 BALB/cBy (H‐2d) mice maintained in the same cage. The antibodies could be detected only for a short period of time; they reacted strongly with H‐2dand H‐2sand weakly with H‐2k,q,rcells.
