We present an approach for determining all possible antigenic relationships among a group of individuals, on the basis of MLC results. We assume that the researcher or tissue typer has a criterion for classifying responses into positives and negatives, and that this classification has already been done for the data set being considered. Given any set of positive and negative MLC responses, our technique produces all antigenic assignments consistent with the assumption that a response occurs if and only if the stimulator has antigen (s) foreign to the responder. No genetic assumptions are made.

We describe mechanical algorithms, involving manipulations of matrices, for listing all possible antigenic relationships among individuals tested in MLC. We also describe an algorithm for determining whether an MLC result can be interpreted in line with our assumption of the preceding paper, that stimulation occurs if, and only if, the stimulator has antigen(s) foreign to the responder.

A group of 43 Australian Aborigines was typed for HLA–DR determinants and other antigens on B cells, using pregnancy sera from Caucasoid women. The group could not be considered as random, since a selection was made for an equal number of Au antigen positive and Au antigen negative individualsThe typing results showed that the specificities DRw2, 4 and 8 were as well defined in this population as in Caucasoids, whereas the specificities DRw1, 3, 5 and 7 could not be defined. Even more interesting was the finding that a cluster of six sera, defining the local B cell specificity LB12, gave positive reactions in 41 out of 43 Aborigines.Although LB12 is found to be highly associated with DRw1, 2 and 6 in the Caucasoid population, in 36 cases the LB12 positive Aborigines could not be demonstrated to carry the specificities DRw1 or 2. The recognition of DRw6 is difficult at the moment and for that reason its presence or absence in this material is uncertain. However, three individuals typed positive for DRw4 and 8 and for LB12 as well. These findings strongly support the hypothesis that the genes coding for LB12 and its postulated allele LB13 are separate from the genes coding for the known DR determinants. LB12 is very likely identical to the recently described determinants DC1 (Tosi&Tanigaki 1979) and MB1 (Duquesnoy et al. 1979a

HLA typing was performed in 1978, using antisera recognizing specificities defined by the Seventh Workshop, on lymphocytes separated and frozen in the field during a 1976 expedition among Amazonian Ticuna Indians. Family segregation of HLA antigens was used to ascertain haplotypes of a sample of essentially unrelated reproductive‐age adults. “Expaternal” haplotypes were also included in the total of 81 haplotypes used for calculating the A and B locus gene frequencies.Common A and B locus antigens among the Ticuna were Aw24, Aw31, A2, Bw39, B40, Bw35, and B15.1. Bw52 and Bw53 were also present. No A or B locus “blanks” were found. A slight degree of European admixture was apparent. Bw16‐reactive cells from certain persons consistently failed to react with Oxford antisera capable of recognizing the Bw38 or Bw39 subspecificities. Cw1 and Cw3 were found in association with typical South American Indian haplotypes. The B15/Bw21/Bw35 related specificities ‘Bu’and ‘SV’have been studied in Bristol and in Leiden, both independently and with mutually exchanged sera and cells. Evidence is presented that these specificities are likely to be discrete though very closely related antigens occurring with a combined phenotype frequency of about 1% in Dutch and English Caucasians. SV may be associated with Aw36, while no clear‐cut haplotype or phenotypic association has yet emerged for Bu with any HLA–A or C locus antigen. IgG and IgM were stripped from the surface of human B lymphocytes using heterologous anti‐IgG or IgM antisera. The percent SIg (surface Ig) determined by fluorescence for SIgM was reduced from 55% to 20%, or a reduction of 64%. Upon stripping SIgM, the B lymphocytes were no longer killed by seven different cold cytotoxic antibodies obtained from kidney transplant patients. One‐hundred‐and‐fifty‐four tetanus patients and 118 normal persons were typed for 27 HLA antigens of A and B loci. There was no significant difference in the frequency of any of these antigens between the normal controls and the tetanus patients. Classification of the patients into mild, moderate and severe also did not show any significant deviation in the frequency of HLA antigens from the controls.Percentage E‐rosettes in normal individuals showed lower values among a low socioeconomic group.
