A group of Gipsies living in two distinct geographic areas in Hungary was determined for HLA‐A,B,C,DR antigens during the 8th Histocompatibility Workshop. A quite strange distribution of HLA antigens was found after comparing the data to those of Hungarian population. HLA‐A1, Bw52, Bw22, B40, Cw1, DR2 and DRw8 are significantly increased in Gipsies, while A3, B7, B12, Cw3, DRw6 and DR7 are decreased. The strongest gametic associations were determined between the allele pairs A1/Bw61, A2/Bw52, Bw22/Cw1, DR2/Bw52 and DRw8/B40. Some deviations from the Hungarian controls were detected in the distribution of the blood groups too. Specifically, the incidence of Rh/D/ negativity and Gm/2/factor positivity is much lower and the incidence of Gm/1/ factor positivity is much higher than in the control Hungarian population. A quality score adapted from information theory is of interest in evaluating HLA typing sera in that it permits the evaluation of a panel of sera detecting a given specificity from the quality characteristics of the sera considered individually. The empirical question of additivity of quality scores is considered using data of the 8th International Histocompatibility Workshop. Additivity is only approximate, which indicates that panels of sera will not be quite as good as would be predicted by summing quality scores of the component sera. Methodological problems regarding estimation of the quality score are considered. The information quality score is related to other indices of serum quality for the special case in which reactions are scored as positive or negative.

We have demonstrated that anti‐Thy 1.1 and certain H‐2 alloantisera contain an antinuclear factor (ANF) detected by fluorescent antimouse IgG. The incidence of ANF positive antisera that we report may actually be an underestimate. ANF is present in sera not only from our laboratory but also from other sources; thus ANF is not an artifact of our laboratory.ANF is not identical to alloantibody, and the ANF appears to be of an autoimmune nature. A variety of environmental and genetic factors may influence the appearance of ANF in anti‐H‐2 sera, but we believe that the consistent detection of ANF in sera directed against H‐2.31, 34 or against H‐2.4 suggests that some specific aspect of immune stimulation by these H‐2 antigens, and likely by other H‐2 antigenic specifications, induces the appearance of ANF. It is not known whether it is these K and D antigens or other determinants associated with the H‐2 complex that may actually provide the immune stimulation for ANF induction. Forty children with coeliac disease were subjected to HLA‐A and B antigens typing using the two‐way lymphocytotoxicity technique. An increase in the frequency of HLA‐B8 and B12 was found in patients as compared to the control group. Family studies conducted in 4 selected families have indicated that four out of five siblings who inherited the HLA‐B8 antigen from their parents have contracted coeliac disease. In one of the families both siblings had HLA‐B8 but only one of them contracted coeliac disease. The results of an antibody blocking technique indicate that H‐Y and H‐2D antigens are close to one another on the surfaces of unfixed thymocytes and lymphocytes, but distant on testicular cells. The findings are the same using cells from mice of several inbred strains (C57BL/10, BALB/c, B6.H‐2k). The data indicate moreover that H‐2K antigens and H‐Y are distant on all cell types tested. Numerous blood group antigens are present in different human tissues where they appear as immunological markers of certain structures. The Pr antigen is the only antigen present in the islet of Langerhans. The A, B, H and Lewis antigens are present in the centro acinar cells and the Pr and Lewis antigens are found on the membrane of the pancreatic ducts. A, B, H and Pk antigens are expressed in the capillaries. These kinds of studies could be important for the transplantation of the endocrine pancreas.

Of 39 consecutive cadaver donors tested, DR antigens could not be detected in 17. Following 3 h incubation of the B lymphocytes at 37°C, eight of the donors with no detectable DR antigens had two DR antigens and nine had one DR antigen.
