The response of H‐2klymphocytes toin vitrostimulation by H‐2band H‐2dspleen cells has been monitored for the production of cytotoxic lymphocytes (CL). Using cells from H‐2bstrains CL which were capable of lysing both H‐2band H‐2dtarget cells (TC) were generated. These results, together with competitive inhibitor studies of the cytotoxic activity against H‐2dTC, demonstrated that Tlymphocytes can respond to both public and private alloantigens of the H‐2 complex. When H‐2d cells were used for stimulation two of the three strains tested induced CL with cytotoxic activity towards both H‐2d and H‐2b TC. These observations indicate that the T cell response to alloantigen, leading to the production of cytotoxic lymphocytes, can be multicomponent like the established B cell response and can be expected to be subject to as much phenotypic variation. Pairs of cultured T and B lymphoid cells, derived from the same individual, were used as stimulating cells in MLC experiments. Blastogenic responses to cultured B cells were much greater than those to the corresponding T cell line. These cells will provide a useful reagent for isolation and characterization of B cell specific antigens.

HLA‐A and B antigens were determined in 112 patient with insulin‐dependent juvenile onset diabetes mellitus, who could be subdivided into “non” and “high responders” to insulin. The data revealed a trend of an association of these diabetes subgroups with only one of the diabetes‐associated antigens HLA‐B8 and HLA‐BW15 and indicated the existence of at least two different genetic constellations for susceptibility to juvenile diabetes mellitus. Rabbit sera used as a complement source contain cytotoxic antibodies which react with cultured human cells. This cytotoxic activity can be inhibited by human IgM. The capacity of IgM, JJL and L chains, and IgM glycopeptides to inhibit these heterospecific antibodies was determined. The inhibitory activity of several monosaccharides, bacterial polysaccharides and blood group substances was also determined. At least some of the heterospecific antibodies in normal rabbit sera are directed against carbohydrate determinants Mannose, fucose, and bacterial polysaccharides containing mannose as the immunodominant sugar are particularly effective in inhibiting cytotoxic antibodies.

Fifty‐four unrelated Japanese patients with psoriasis vulgaris were tissue typed using the Sixth International Histocompatibility Workshop antisera. Two control groups were included in this study: Thirty‐one pustulosis palmaris et plantaris and 17 seborrheic dermatitis as a disease control and 66 normal, healthy, unrelated Japanese as a reference.HLA‐A1 (P = 0.0065) from the A locus and HLA‐BW37 (P = 0.0164) from the B locus were found to occur with increased frequency in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. No significant difference in antigen frequencies in pustulosis palmaris et plantaris was found, however, HLA‐AW30 and/or AW31 and HLA‐B12 occurred with increased frequency in seborrheic dermatitits. No linkage between psoriasis and HLA was observed in eight families. Therefore our findings in Japanese do not confirm the previous observation made in Caucasians of an association between psoriasis vulgaris and HLA

One homozygous cell ‘Wa’ for HLA‐D alleles, associated with HLA‐Bw22J (Japanese specific variant of HLA‐Bw22), was found in a Japanese family. The HLA‐D antigenic specificity defined by this cell has been tentatively named LD‐Wa. Phenotype frequency of LD‐Wa in the Japanese population was 0.16 (13/81).HLA‐D typing for LD‐Wa was performed in patients with the Vogt‐Koyanagi‐Harada syndrome (Harada's disease) with which Bw22J is strongly associated (15/35, 42.9%; corrected P>0.02). LD‐Wa was present in 22 of 33 patients (66.7%; P>0.0000003). The association of LD‐Wa with Harada's disease was stronger than that of Bw22J, and this implies that there might be one of the disease susceptibility gene loci affecting the development of this disease more closely linked to an HLA‐D ge

One hundred and sixty‐nine pregnancies with lymphocyte cytotoxic antibody activity were found out of 851 full term pregnancies studied. A rise in incidence of antibody activity was found through first, second and third pregnancies. The average scores for antibody titre and avidity were similar for antibodies to the A and B loci in first, second and third pregnancies though individual scores varied greatly. HLA antigens have been identified in patients with juvenile chronic polyarthritis (J.C.P.) (n = 35). In J.C.P. the incidence of antigen B27 (57%) was found to be higher than in a normal population (n = 1,000). On recent evaluation of the clinical status, serology and x‐rays, the patients with juvenile chronic polyarthritis who have been followed up for many years, could be subdivided into four groups: Group 1: J.C.P. evolving to ankylosing spondylitis (n = 3); Group 2: J.C.P. with sacroiliitis (n = 17); Group 3: J.C.P. without sacroiliitis (n = 9); Group 4: juvenile rheumatoid arthritis characterised by a positive serology (n = 6).Groups 1 and 2 were characterised by a high incidence of antigen B27 (19/20). Only one subject of groups 3 and 4 had antigen B27. Sex distribution in groups 1 and 2 was found to be similar to that found in ankylosing spondylitis in adults and sex distribution in groups 3 and 4 was found to be similar to that found in rheumatoid arthritis in adults.It is concluded that if B27 positives develop juvenile chronic polyarthritis they have a high risk of developing sacroiliitis and acute uveitis.The authors propose to give the name Still's disease to the total group of children presenting initial symptoms corresponding to the criteria of Ansell&By waters (1959).
