Tissue typing (HLA‐A, ‐B and ‐DR) was carried out on 92 patients with coeliac disease (CD) and on a further 71 first degree relatives of 13 of these patients. Results of antigen frequencies in unrelated patients and segregation analysis in families shows that HLA‐DR3 but not HLA‐DR7 is positively associated with CD. Haplotype and sib‐pair data from these coeliac families suggest that with all of them, genetic susceptibility to CD lies in the HLA region of the sixth chromosome. An association between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the HLA antigen DR4 supports the view that genes in the HLA region are important in susceptibility to this disease. To further define the basis for genetic susceptibility to RA, we analyzed HLA haplotype sharing among affected and unaffected individuals in 29 multiple‐case families with definite or classic RA. Sixty‐two Dutch patients with the diagnosis paranoid schizophrenia (SCH) were HLA‐A‐, ‐B‐ and ‐C‐typed. An increase in the frequencies of A9 (P= 0.02, relative risk 1.8) and B5 (P= 0.04, relative risk 1.9) was found. Although these correlations do not remain significant after correction for the number of antigens tested, both findings confirm other data from the literature, including the first published report from a population in Sweden. To investigate the possible relation between HLA antigens and either favourable clinical response or toxic reaction to two different gold compounds, aurothioglucose and auranofin, a new orally absorbable gold compound, we studied 50 patients with rheumatoid arthritis prospectively. Of the 25 aurothioglucose‐treated patients, response to treatment could not be evaluated in four patients because of early toxicity. Nine patients showed an excellent response, while 12 were moderate or non‐responders. Four of the 9 excellent responders were HLA‐DR3 positive, but none of the 12 moderate or non‐responders possessed this antigen (P<0.025). In accordance with previous reports HLA‐DR3 was found more frequently in patients developing toxicity on aurothioglucose than in those who did not (RR = 5.6). No association was found between HLA antigens and favourable clinical response in 25 auranofin‐treated patients. Two of them showed a severe adverse reaction, neither of them being DR3‐positive. HLA‐A, B, C and DR typing was performed in 19 patients with sarcoidosis of acute onset. Besides bilateral hilar lymph node enlargement (BHL), ankle joint involvement was found in all and erythema nodosum in seven. HLA‐B8 was present in 13 and HLA‐DR3 in 17 of the 19 patients. The joint manifestations and the erythema nodosum subsided in all within three months. The BHL regressed completely in seventeen patients during a three year observation period. In two patients with an observation period of one year and less than six months, respectively, BHL were still visible.The strong association between the acute, prognostically beneficial manifestation of sarcoidosis and HLA‐DR3 might partly be related to the presence of circulating immune complexes in acute sarcoidosis as well as to an immunogenetically determined handling of a postulated etiological

Congenic lines carryingH‐2haplotypes derived from wild mice were typed serologically with polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies specific for Tla, Qa‐1, and Qa‐2 antigens. The typing revealed the presence of a minimum of fiveTla,fourQa‐1, and threeQa‐2alleles in the 32 lines. Two newTla, two newQa‐1, and one newQa‐2alleles could be described. This polymorphism ofTlaandQaloci is lower than that detected at theKandDloci in the same lines.
