Knowledge acquisition—developing the knowledge base from an expert—is one of the most time-consuming aspects of the process. Work is under way on methods of automating this procedure, one of which is rule induction from a set of examples. This paper introduces rule induction and evaluates some of the practical difficulties.

AbstractThis paper is a preliminary attempt to compare the personality of O.R. workers with research scientists and other professionals in the management area. It is based on 16PF personality tests carried out on 56 U.K. operational research workers. The results indicate that this group has a personality profile which is significantly different from the published profiles of the professional groupings. It is believed that the results are highly indicative and justify further research.

AbstractA multistep approach to determining the optimal parameters of an exponential smoothing model was used to forecast emergency medical service (E.M.S.) demand for four counties of South Carolina. Daily emergency and routine (non-emergency) demand data were obtained and forecast statistics generated for each county sampled, using Winters' exponential smoothing model. A goal programme was formulated to combine forecast results for emergency calls with routine call forecasts. The goal programme gave a higher priority to accurate forecasting of emergency demand. The forecast model generated implicitly weights demand by severity and provides a reliable estimate of demand overall. The optimal parameter values for the smoothing model were obtained by minimizing the objective function value of the goal programming problem.The parameter values obtained were used to forecast demand for E.M.S. in the selected counties. The results of the model were compared to those obtained using a multiple linear regression model and a single-objective-based exponential smoothing model for 2 months of data. When compared with two single-objective forecast models, the multiple-objective approach yielded more accurate forecasts and, therefore, was more cost-effective for the planner. The model presents and demonstrates a theoretical approach to improving the accuracy of ambulance demand forecasts. The possible impact of this approach on planning efficiency is discussed.

AbstractMany approaches to the problem of arranging customer orders for cutting or corrugation have focused on the minimization of trim waste. This views the corrugator more or less in isolation. When downstream machines or customer due-dates exist, however, customer service may suffer from the desire to keep scrap at a low level. Thus, if slightly higher levels of waste were accepted, the production scheduler might be able to improve performance regarding due dates.We developed a simulation model, for Domtar Packaging Ltd, of a corrugated cardboard box factory, which included the corrugation process and four finishing machines. Customer orders were generated via empirical and theoretical probability distributions, then sent through the model according to one of several scheduling rules. This allowed the relationship between various levels of trim waste and customer service to be viewed. Results of the simulation experiments, as well as a discussion of the model itself, are given. Comments and conclusions regarding both our model and corrugator algorithms in general are presented in the light of the role of the human scheduler in plants of this type.

AbstractThis paper addresses the quality control problem faced by a coal mine of satisfying a specified minimum net calorific value (NCV) requirement for the coal loaded at an export harbour, by means of a control strategy on the gross calorific value (GCV) at the mine's wash-plant. From the NCV:GCV relationship a formula for the target mean GCV at the wash-plant is derived. This takes into account the variation of the GCV from the wash-plant, the joint variation of GCV, hydrogen, total and air-dried moistures at the ship sampler and the minimum NCV requirement specified in the export contract. A Bayesian control strategy is derived whereby the specific gravity of the heavy-liquid medium in the wash-plant is changed in response to deviations in the GCV from its target value. Finally, the theory is used to establish a quality control strategy for an open-cast coal mine.

AbstractThis note considers the n-job, one-machine scheduling problem with common due-dates. Previous research has shown that the optimal value of the common due-date coincides with one of the job completion times for a given job sequence. In this note, we propose a linear programming (L.P.) formulation of the problem and obtain the same optimal result via considering the L.P. dual problem.
