摘要:
AbstractRecognition of the increasing problem of communication in a growing Research and Development unit led to the development of a planning and progressing system as a means of directing management attention to those areas where it was most needed. With the system, a project is first defined and has precise criteria of success set. Progress is then reported to management at 4-weekly intervals in terms of an expected completion date and a technical feasibility index, together with costs, based on scientific effort expended, and the main factor determining rate of work. Thus with a minimum of communication management is provided with a guide to the state of projects under its control. Further summaries of the data at longer intervals serve to provide a broader indication of the problem areas in the laboratory.

摘要:
AbstractThe object of this paper is twofold: first, to present a brief survey of the various techniques used in the measurement of risk in capital investment proposals; second, to show how, under certain assumptions, the probability distributions of the two most commonly used profitability criterion functions, viz. Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return, can be obtained. This approach was first presented by Hillier in a paper published inManagement Sciencefor the single investment case. It was further generalized by him to the case of interrelated investments in an outstanding paper published in July 1964 asTechnical Report No.73 under contract with the office of Naval Research. These papers are theoretically oriented. The present paper discusses Hillier's approach and considers some numerical examples showing how the approach can be implemented in practice. Secondly, the starting point of Hillier's analysis are the means and variances of cash flows. In many situations these may not be known directly. What may be available are the means and variances of factors which make up these cash flows. The present paper discusses methods for handling such situations.

摘要:
AbstractPrevious work on stock control has been mainly concerned with specific models or situations. This paper is an attempt at a more general method capable of dealing with distributed demands coupled with distributed lead times for a single stage stock system. Although primarily intended for manual operation, extensions to computer use are indicated. The criterion for determining stock investment is discussed and one based on return on capital employed is advocated.

摘要:
AbstractA modification is proposed to forecasting systems employing exponential smoothing whereby the response rate is varied and made to depend on the value of a tracking signal. In a simple system, this is equivalent to varyingαthe smoothing constant according to the extent to which biased forecasts are being obtained. Such a system is shown to react much faster to, for example, step changes whilst still retaining the facility to filter out random noise.

摘要:
AbstractA very simple graphical method is described for successively modifying a fitted trend line in the light of each fresh observation on a time series. The method is shown to be equivalent to the well-established method of exponential smoothing described by Holt. The graphical method is of some interest in its own right and also adds insight into the workings of Holt's method.
