摘要:
AbstractA description of a long-range planning project undertaken by B.I.S.R.A. for an engineering company. The project developed a systematic, structured methodology and applied it to the current strategic problems. A three-level integrated planning system was proposed: Strategic (10-15 year) planning of the company's broad areas of interest; Development (5-year) planning of specific projects within these; and Fiscal (short-term) planning. The application of the analysis to the current situation identified and quantified forecast shortcomings relative to objectives, and provided a reasoned basis for planning how to overcome these shortfalls or realistically revise objectives. Included in the proposals was an organization of the planning function designed to secure the co-operation, consent and commitment of the line departments.

摘要:
AbstractThe paper describes a decision-making model to control the entire expenditure by Rolls-Royce Aero Engine Division with outside suppliers. The project began as an“investigation into economic order quantities”, and expanded into an automatic decision-making package for determining the size of orders to be placed on suppliers, the length of time into the future these orders should stretch, the best price break information to ask for, and the extent to which changes in demand within Rolls-Royce should be suppressed to cushion the suppliers from unnecessary fluctuations. A conservative estimate of savings which result from implementing a model of this nature is that the purchase bill is reduced by at least 5 per cent and the inventory by somewhere in the region of 15 per cent.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes an approach developed to minimize the cost of refuse collection operations in a city of 150,000 population. The method is general and applicable to a city of any size.A model is derived for collection which is a function of varied housing layouts, collection times, team sizes and the distance of the collection rounds from the disposal point. Then a computational method is developed which allocates collection operatives to vehicles and designs rounds which together minimize the total collection cost.The advantages of the method are:(a) It reduces collection costs. The“one-off”cost of applying the method to 10 per cent of the local authorities in the U.K. would be [pound]150,000 and yield a reduction in costs of [pound]500,000 p.a.(b) It enables management to replan rounds quickly as circumstances change.(c) Other applications, which are being investigated, are also discussed.
