AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to clarify from methodological and philosophical standpoints the status of trip distribution models and criticisms of them. The discussion first establishes the foundation of models in analogy. Then the analogy is identified in each of the more common trip distribution models. Criticisms of these models are viewed as observations on the appropriateness of the analogy and its use in each model. It is maintained that the relevance and validity of some of these criticisms depends on the philosophical light in which the function of models is viewed.

AbstractThis paper is concerned with presenting a method of modelling a job shop based on queueing theory. The model is very flexible and may be used to explore the relationships between the resources available in the shop (numbers and characteristics of machines, manpower levels and skills), the workload in the shop, the mode of operation of the shop (labour allocation and priority schemes) and the resulting level of congestion within the shop.A range of results is presented, based on the application of the model to a real environment, where good agreement with the observed performance was obtained.

AbstractA method is presented for determining the optimal capacity of a production system which encounters a strong seasonal demand for its output. A model is developed for analysing the trade-offs between plant capacity and different production strategies. The production strategies are computed by linear programming for a range of plant capacities and a given demand pattern. The annual capital costs of the plant are calculated as a function of plant capacity and the two costs are added in order to determine the plant capacity corresponding to the least cost.

AbstractA framework for classifying corporate models is presented. Criteria for selecting the approach most appropriate for strategic planning are suggested. Experience of developing corporate financial simulation models in three separate companies is analysed. This is related to findings from an analysis of thirty-four models reported in the literature and of two surveys in the United States.

AbstractIt has been well established that for optimum operation of a re-order level policy, re-order levels and replenishment order quantities should be jointly calculated. There exist many solutions to this stock control problem. A number of these involve approximations which simplify the mathematics of the problem but yield non-optimal solutions, while others raise the question of whether the additional computational effort required, due to mathematical complexity, is economically justified.This paper describes that if the lead time demand can be considered as normally distributed and lead time is constant, then it is possible to arrive at optimal values of safety stocks-consequently re-order levels-and order quantities, with minimum computational effort, through a nomogram which accomplishes a major part of the necessary computations.The flow chart of a program that can make the calculations is also presented.
